A day of atonement, fasting, and prayer, emphasis is placed on individual reflection and atonement in preparation for the year to come. It\u2019s estimated that 15,000-20,000 Jews live in Sweden, and because even secular Jews tend to celebrate <em>Jom kippur<\/em>, as it\u2019s spelled in Swedish, it&#8217;s our topic of the week! We\u2019ll study a Swedish text about Yom Kippur and learn some vocabulary central to observing this Jewish holy day.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Judar och Jom kippur i Sverige idag<\/em> \/ Jews and Yom Kippur in Sweden Today<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yom Kippur falls 10 days after the celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the 2-day celebration of Jewish New Year. Jews who observe Yom Kippur tend to spend most of the day attending prayer services held in the synagogue. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jfst.se\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Judiska F\u00f6rsamlingen Stockholm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has hosted several services over the past couple of days, both in-person and streaming online. Beyond Stockholm, there are 3 other official Swedish Jewish congregations in G\u00f6teborg, Malm\u00f6, and Helsingborg.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Swedish Jews are one of <a href=\"https:\/\/sweden.se\/life\/equality\/swedens-national-minorities\">five official minorities in Sweden<\/a> and Yiddish is considered an official minority language. In Sweden, these minority languages and cultures are protected by law to preserve cultural practices and protect civil rights. Although Islam is a steadily growing religion in Sweden, it is not yet an officially recognized minority. You may remember from my post <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/8-of-swedes-celebrate-religious-festival-eid\/\">8% of Swedes Celebrate Religious Festival Eid,<\/a> that an estimated 800,000 Swedish Muslims make up the population.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vocab and Fill-in-the-blank
