They provide us with clean air, the material to wood to build and heat our homes, so why don&#8217;t we know their names? Seems like the least we could do. To keep the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> skog<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> momentum going from <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/swedish\/sweden-a-mushroom-loving-culture\/\">last week\u2019s mushrooming post<\/a>, I thought we should spend some time catching up with the trees. As a language student, it may be easy for you to hop over technical vocabulary lists because you take one glance and think, &#8220;when will I <em>really<\/em> need to know the names of Swedish trees?&#8221; But imagine the moment when a seemingly simple Swedish <em>fika<\/em> conversation shifts focus to the type of wood used to build your coffee table, and all of the sudden, you&#8217;re stumped. (Ha!) I try to do this regularly to keep my language dynamic and fresh. My favorite resource is a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">bildordbok<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (picture dictionary) because as research shows, people have an easier time memorizing vocabulary when it&#8217;s tied to imagery. The specific one that I use is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Illustrated-Swedish-Dictionary-Swedish-English-English-Swedish\/dp\/9188423107\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Engelsk bildordbok &#8211; svenska\/engelska,<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> published in 2007* and consists of 576 pages of detailed illustrations of topics ranging from the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">djurriket<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (animal kingdom) to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">k\u00e4rnv\u00e4rme<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (thermal energy), to the features of a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">barockkyrka<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (Baroque church). It is DETAILED, and we&#8217;ll use it to guide us.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Ett tr\u00e4d, flera tr\u00e4d!<\/em> One tree, several trees!\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The following vocabulary is featured from pages 68-71 of my <em>bildordbok<\/em>, starting with the Swedish noun for tree:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ett tr\u00e4d \u2192 tr\u00e4det \u2192 tr\u00e4d \u2192 tr\u00e4den <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a tree \u2192 the tree \u2192 trees \u2192 the trees<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>*OBS &#8211; don&#8217;t forget to include the d at the end of <em>tr\u00e4d<\/em> in your pronunciation. I hear a lot of beginners drop the d, and say <em>tr\u00e4,<\/em> which means wood. Close, but not what you were going for!<\/p>\n<p>Now, let&#8217;s meet two categories of trees, <em>b\u00e4rrtr\u00e4d<\/em> (conifers) and <em>bredbladiga<\/em> (broad-leaved trees), also referred to as <em>l\u00f6vtr\u00e4d<\/em> (deciduous) trees.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Umg\u00e5s med b\u00e4rrtr\u00e4d<\/em> \/ Hang out with conifers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Ett b\u00e4rrtr\u00e4d<\/em> is a conifer.
