The multi-day United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP26, is about to wrap up. Political leaders, climate scientists, and activists came to Glasgow, Scotland to spark action, address shortcomings, and reach international agreements to curb climate change. This week, we\u2019ll look at the 8sidor<\/a> article Politikerna lovar f\u00f6r\u00e4ndring<\/em> (The politicians promise change), and learn some important nouns and verbs to help you discuss COP26 in Swedish.<\/span>

How to learn new Swedish vocabulary<\/span><\/h2>\n

When learning new<\/strong> vocabulary in your target language, it\u2019s best to do it within context, rather than drilling yourself with flashcards. The Duolingos of the world are great, but it\u2019s proven that people remember new words easier when they are tied to a good story, article, song, or even memory.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now a few steps to help you process a new Swedish text:<\/p>\n

1. <\/strong>When approaching a text that you are reading for the first time, start by translating the title<\/strong> into your native language and have a good dictionary on hand. Tyda.se<\/a> is my go-to online dictionary.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>2.When reading the article<\/strong><\/span><\/a> for the first time, don\u2019t obsess about understanding every word that you are reading, just do your best to digest what you can. Now, go and spend 3-5 minutes reading this week’s article and consider some simple reading comprehension questions – what are we reading about? Who are the people in the article? What\u2019s happening? Why? <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>3. <\/strong>After reading the article, start a word list<\/strong> and categorize it by parts of speech. Bonus! I’ve made one for you! The list is divided into nouns and verbs. Read over each of the lists a couple of times, saying the words aloud as you go. When you read the article below you’ll see the nouns are written in kursivstil\u00a0<\/em> (italics)<\/em> and the verbs in fetstil<\/strong> (bold type).<\/span>

Till exempel har flera av l\u00e4nderna lovat att fler skogar<\/em> ska f\u00e5 vara kvar<\/strong>. Skogarna<\/em> \u00e4r viktiga f\u00f6r klimatet<\/em>. De stora regnskogarna<\/em> \u00e4r s\u00e4rskilt viktiga.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Vi m\u00e5ste skydda<\/strong> naturen i st\u00e4llet f\u00f6r att f\u00f6rst\u00f6ra<\/strong> den, sa Storbritanniens ledare Boris Johnson.<\/span><\/p>\n

M\u00e5nga av l\u00e4nderna har<\/strong> ocks\u00e5 lovat att sl\u00e4ppa ut<\/strong> mindre metan<\/em>. Metan<\/em> \u00e4r en av gaserna som g\u00f6r att jorden blir varmare. Den kommer bland annat fr\u00e5n fabriker och jordbruk<\/em>. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>P\u00e5 fredag och l\u00f6rdag ska det vara stora demonstrationer i Glasgow. M\u00e5nga m\u00e4nniskor litar<\/strong> inte p\u00e5<\/strong> att poltikerna<\/em> kommer h\u00e5lla det de lovar.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anton Foley \u00e4r med i organisationen Fridays for future. Han s\u00e4ger att inget av de tidigare m\u00f6tena<\/em> som politikerna har haft har gjort n\u00e5got stor skillnad<\/em> f\u00f6r klimatet<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n
