Not only is this the first post of the new year, it&#8217;s also music-themed. January in Minnesota is a lot like it is in Sweden. It\u2019s a quiet, reflective time &#8211; it&#8217;s cold, it\u2019s dark, and we&#8217;re all slowly recovering from the busy holiday season. That\u2019s why this week\u2019s song is perfect &#8211; Sarah Dawn Finer\u2019s \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6fte<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \/ New Year\u2019s Resolution\u201d is a laid-back ballad, with excellent vocals, and even more excellent vocabulary for you to learn.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vem \u00e4r Sarah Dawn Finer? Who is Sarah Dawn Finer?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sarah Dawn Finer is a <em>svensk s\u00e5ngare, l\u00e5tskrivare, and programledare<\/em> (Swedish singer, songwriter, and show host). She was born in Stockholm to an American mother and English father, so it\u2019s no surprise that most of her original music is in English. She developed a love for gospel and soul music at an early age. After attending the prestigious Adolf Fredrik\u2019s Music School in Stockholm, her solo acting and music career took off!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sarah has competed in and hosted the Swedish song contest <em>Melodifestivalen<\/em> a handful of times.<em> Gillar du musikaler?<\/em> (Do you like musicals?) Sarah has played a variety of roles on the stage, including Joanne in \u201cRent\u201d and Lucy in \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jekyll &amp; Hyde.\u201d If you like good acting and powerful vocals, check out her work!<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6fte<\/em> &#8211; New Year\u2019s Resolution\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The noun <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ett ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6fte <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is a compound word that literally means new year promise (or pledge). Although it is an <em>ett<\/em> noun, it ends in a vowel, so it takes an \u201cn\u201d in its plural form &#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6ften. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Surprise! \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6fte\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is also the name of a Sarah Dawn Finer song that we will study this week.<\/p>\n<p>From her 2014 album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vinterland<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the song captures the harsh beauty of Swedish winter. The first time, <em>att<\/em> is pronounced as <em>\u00e5, <\/em>a common<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0colloquial version of the word. The second time, you\u2019ll hear the <em>att<\/em> with a hard t-ending. Why pronounce the first att as <em>\u00e5<\/em> and the second as <em>att<\/em>? It varies speaker to speaker, but I find that when the <em>att<\/em> works as a direct stand-in for the English &#8220;to&#8221; it&#8217;s pronounced as <em>\u00e5<\/em>: <em>Jag lovar <strong>\u00e5<\/strong> sluta<\/em> &#8211; I promise <strong>to<\/strong> stop. But some folks would say \u00e5 on both <em>att<\/em>s <em>Jag lovar <strong>\u00e5<\/strong> sluta <strong>\u00e5<\/strong> ringa.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>Ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6fte av Sarah Dawn Finer<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The lyrics are posted below the video.
