January in Minnesota is a lot like it is in Sweden. It\u2019s a quiet, reflective time – it’s cold, it\u2019s dark, and we’re all slowly recovering from the busy holiday season. That\u2019s why this week\u2019s song is perfect – Sarah Dawn Finer\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6fte<\/span><\/i> \/ New Year\u2019s Resolution\u201d is a laid-back ballad, with excellent vocals, and even more excellent vocabulary for you to learn.<\/span>

Vem \u00e4r Sarah Dawn Finer? Who is Sarah Dawn Finer?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Sarah Dawn Finer is a svensk s\u00e5ngare, l\u00e5tskrivare, and programledare<\/em> (Swedish singer, songwriter, and show host). She was born in Stockholm to an American mother and English father, so it\u2019s no surprise that most of her original music is in English. She developed a love for gospel and soul music at an early age. After attending the prestigious Adolf Fredrik\u2019s Music School in Stockholm, her solo acting and music career took off!<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Sarah has competed in and hosted the Swedish song contest Melodifestivalen<\/em> a handful of times. Gillar du musikaler?<\/em> (Do you like musicals?) Sarah has played a variety of roles on the stage, including Joanne in \u201cRent\u201d and Lucy in \u201c<\/span>Jekyll & Hyde.\u201d If you like good acting and powerful vocals, check out her work!<\/span>

Ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6fte<\/em> – New Year\u2019s Resolution\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The noun <\/span>ett ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6fte <\/span><\/i>is a compound word that literally means new year promise (or pledge). Although it is an ett<\/em> noun, it ends in a vowel, so it takes an \u201cn\u201d in its plural form – <\/span>ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6ften. <\/span><\/i>Surprise! \u201c<\/span>Ny\u00e5rsl\u00f6fte\u201d<\/span><\/i> is also the name of a Sarah Dawn Finer song that we will study this week.<\/p>\n

    Pronunciation att<\/em> versus \u00e5\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

    In the line \u201cJag lovar att sluta att ringa<\/em>\u201d (I promise to stop calling) you\u2019ll notice two differences in the pronunciation of the word att<\/em>. The first time, att<\/em> is pronounced as \u00e5, <\/em>a common<\/span>\u00a0colloquial version of the word. The second time, you\u2019ll hear the att<\/em> with a hard t-ending. Why pronounce the first att as \u00e5<\/em> and the second as att<\/em>? It varies speaker to speaker, but I find that when the att<\/em> works as a direct stand-in for the English “to” it’s pronounced as \u00e5<\/em>: Jag lovar \u00e5<\/strong> sluta<\/em> – I promise to<\/strong> stop. But some folks would say \u00e5 on both att<\/em>s Jag lovar \u00e5<\/strong> sluta \u00e5<\/strong> ringa.
