Present participles take the -ing form in English and serve an array of grammatical purposes. This week, we\u2019ll learn how to construct the present participle in Swedish using the suffixes –<\/span>ande<\/span><\/i> and –<\/span>ende<\/span><\/i>, four common ways to integrate this concept into your speech, and practice with some <\/span>sp\u00e4nnande<\/span><\/i> sentences!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How to construct the present participle in Swedish<\/span><\/h2>\n

The two endings for Swedish present participles are -ande<\/em>, and –ende<\/em>. To create a present participle, grab the infinitive version<\/a> of the verb you’d like to modify and select the correct suffix.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>So, for verbs that end in -a, add -ande<\/em><\/strong>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>att<\/span> springa \u2192 springande<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\nPeter saw a running<\/span> horse in the field.

\n<\/span>ta \u2192 tagande<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Uses of present participles in Swedish<\/span><\/h2>\n

There are 4 main uses of this part of speech. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>1. First, as an adjective to modify a person, place, or thing: <\/strong>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 Klara har ett <\/span><\/i>lysande<\/span><\/i><\/span> leende.<\/span><\/i> Klara has a beeming<\/span> smile. <\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>2. As an adverb, often paired with a motion verb:<\/strong>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Tobbe kom hoppande<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>fr\u00e5n kajen med en fisk i hand. <\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Tobbe came skipping<\/span> from the dock with a fish in hand.<\/span>

\n<\/span>3. As a noun to describe a person or a thing with a specific function: <\/strong>
