Exploring a new city, navigating a foreign language and culture, starting at a new university or job – these are all things to consider when moving abroad. Why this topic for this week’s blog? Because I myself am in the process of moving abroad – to Sweden, and it’s all I can think about!<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>As I\u2019m sitting amongst moving boxes, piles of donation items, and trying to eat the last of what\u2019s in my fridge and freezer, I\u2019m thinking about my checklist for moving to Sweden and all the things I\u2019ve done to get to this point. Below, I will outline my process for moving to Sweden in 6 steps and we’ll stock our vocabularies along the way.<\/p>\n

*Please note, this is in no way a comprehensive guide to moving to Sweden. Consult the proper Swedish authorities for the details, I link to some of them below.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

Jag ville flytta till Sverige, s\u00e5 h\u00e4r gjorde jag \/ I wanted to move to Sweden, this is what I did:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Jag s\u00f6kte intressanta jobb<\/em>. I looked for interesting jobs.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Arbetsf\u00f6rmedlingen<\/em><\/a> is the Swedish Public Employment Service and is a great place to look for work. With their job board Platsbanken<\/em><\/a>, you can look for work via keywords like ort<\/em> (city) and yrke<\/em> (industry). I used LinkedIn\u2019s job board too and set alerts for jobs in my field in major cities Stockholm, G\u00f6teborg, and Malm\u00f6. In most cases, you’ll need a heltidsjobb<\/em> (full-time job) to justify a work permit.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>Jag gick p\u00e5 anst\u00e4llningsintervjuer och till slut fick jag ett anst\u00e4llningserbjudande. <\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>I had job interviews and in the end, got an offer of employment.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Jag ans\u00f6kte arbetsvisum och uppeh\u00e5llstillst\u00e5nd.<\/em> I applied for a work visa and residence permit.<\/span><\/h2>\n

Migrationsverket<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is the Swedish Migration Agency and the folks who process all study, work, and residence visas. Their website has loads of information on what steps to take when moving to Sweden. The U.S. is utanf\u00f6r EU<\/em> (outside the E.U.) so my arbets- och uppeh\u00e5llstillsand<\/em> (work and residence permits) needed to be submitted and approved before entering Sweden.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tillsammans med min nya arbetsgivare ans\u00f6kte jag arbetstillst\u00e5nd och uppeh\u00e5llstillst\u00e5nd via Migrationsverket.<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>Together with my new employer, I applied for a work permit and residence permit via Migrationsverket.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Visumen \u00e4r klara, dags att packa resv\u00e4skorna!<\/em> The visas are ready, time to pack our bags!<\/span><\/h2>\n

Jag och min partner packar v\u00e4skorna och s\u00e4ljer v\u00e5ra m\u00f6bler. Vi beh\u00e5ller inte s\u00e5 mycket.<\/span><\/em>
\n<\/span>My partner and I are packing our bags and selling our furniture. We\u2019re not keeping very much.<\/span>
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>…if it doesn’t spark joy, we’re not keeping it. Ever heard of Swedish d\u00f6dst\u00e4dning<\/em><\/a> ( death cleaning)? It’s a very pragmatic way to think about your life and your clutter because you can’t take it with you when you’re gone, right?<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Bes\u00f6ka Migrationsverket<\/em> \/ Visit the Migration Board<\/span><\/h2>\n

Vi m\u00e5ste l\u00e4mna fingeravtryck och bli fotograferad.<\/em>
\nWe have to give our fingerprints and have our photos taken.\u00a0Once that is complete, we’ll get our uppeh\u00e5llstillst\u00e5ndskort<\/em> (residence permit cards).
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Folkbokf\u00f6ra oss p\u00e5 Skatteverket<\/em> \/ Complete our Population Registry at the Tax Agency
\n<\/span><\/h2>\n

Om man ska bo i Sverige ett \u00e5r m\u00e5ste man bli folkbokf\u00f6rd.<\/em>
\nIf you’re going to live in Sweden for a year you must join the population registry.<\/span><\/p>\n

After that, you get a personnummer<\/em>, your Swedish ID number. Skatteverket’<\/em>s website has a series of short Ny i Sverige<\/em> films<\/a> explaining this process in more detail.<\/p>\n

6. Hitta boende \/ Find a place to live<\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

Finding a place to live in large Swedish cities can be difficult. Many people end up getting an andrahandskontrakt<\/em> (a second-hand contract), and subletting a place from someone else. Blocket.se<\/em><\/a> is a great online marketplace to find bostad<\/em> (housing) and the m\u00f6bler<\/em> (furniture) to fill it.
