So what about the gangs and drugs in Thailand? Well, there just wasn\u2019t any that I could find. I don\u2019t even hear stories. I\u2019m not saying they don\u2019t exist, I\u2019m just saying that from my experiences these two problems are mostly irrelevant to the prostitution situation. What about diseases? Fortunately, not all Thai politicians are useless. One such politician, who calls himself \u201cMr Condom<\/a>\u201d made the country aware of the AIDs epidemic and made condom usage culturally acceptable to Thais. I\u2019d even encourage you to check out one of his chain restaurants – good food, and interesting decorations.<\/p>\n

language notes: The Thai word for condom is the same as in English, kawn1dawm3 \u0e04\u0e2d\u0e19\u0e14\u0e49\u0e2d\u0e21. Another popular word is tung5 \u0e16\u0e38\u0e07 or tung5 yaang1 \u0e16\u0e38\u0e07\u0e22\u0e32\u0e07, which basically means bag or pouch. You can also use the slang word yaang1 \u0e22\u0e32\u0e07, which means \u2018rubber\u2019 (also just like in English).<\/p>\n

So is Thai prostitution \u2018good\u2019 and US prostitution \u2018bad\u2019? Well, unlike in the US, Asia in general has a serious problem with trafficking and forced prostitution. And child prostitution. Money given to these criminals will of course result in more kidnappings and such. I also see mothers sending their 3 year old girls begging for money alone in the red-light districts, making my heart sink. And it funds corrupt politicians and police officers, which lead to other societal problems. My friend Lek does it voluntarily; that\u2019s her choice and I respect that. But you will always find \u2018bad people\u2019 lurking in the darker side of any country. By being a customer you risk funding their \u2018bad\u2019 activities.<\/p>\n

Anyway, we all have our own beliefs of what is and isn\u2019t moral, I\u2019m just explaining to you the cultural aspect from my own experiences.<\/p>\n

Shifting the subject a bit, I once posed a question to these \u2018working\u2019 girls: what do you consider to be the perfect guy? I honestly thought they\u2019d have a long list of \u2018requirements\u2019 given their lengthy experiences with men. But their unified answer shocked me: \u201cI\u2019ll take whoever is willing to marry me.\u201d I\u2019d ask, \u2018well, what about skin color? Or education? Or what country they come from? Or money?\u2019 They said if they could choose, they would, but they\u2019ve long since given up on that. They\u2019ll take whatever they can get.<\/p>\n

So whatever happened to Lek? The last I heard from her, she messaged me from Britain telling me she married this British guy. She had no interest in talking about him, and so I understood what that meant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
