{"id":1257,"date":"2012-06-11T19:25:48","date_gmt":"2012-06-11T19:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/thai\/?p=1257"},"modified":"2012-06-09T14:32:15","modified_gmt":"2012-06-09T14:32:15","slug":"book-thai-vs-spoken-thai-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/thai\/book-thai-vs-spoken-thai-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Thai vs. Spoken Thai, Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Example 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s go with another example,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you want to go to university today?\u201d<br \/>\nThe \u2018perfect\u2019 book translation would be,<\/p>\n<p>\u0e04\u0e38\u0e13\u0e2d\u0e22\u0e32\u0e01\u0e44\u0e1b\u0e40\u0e23\u0e35\u0e22\u0e19\u0e17\u0e35\u0e48\u0e21\u0e2b\u0e32\u0e27\u0e34\u0e17\u0e22\u0e32\u0e25\u0e31\u0e22\u0e44\u0e2b\u0e21\u0e04\u0e23\u0e31\u0e1a?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are many issues with this sentence: it\u2019s too long, too many syllables, way overly redundant, too polite, no slang, etc.<\/p>\n<p>First, we all know who the speaker is talking to because the speaker is looking at the listener (because if the speaker was looking at the wall, we\u2019d question his\/her sanity). So let\u2019s get rid of \u2018you\u2019 from the sentence:<\/p>\n<p>\u0e2d\u0e22\u0e32\u0e01\u0e44\u0e1b\u0e40\u0e23\u0e35\u0e22\u0e19\u0e17\u0e35\u0e48\u0e21\u0e2b\u0e32\u0e27\u0e34\u0e17\u0e22\u0e32\u0e25\u0e31\u0e22\u0e44\u0e2b\u0e21\u0e04\u0e23\u0e31\u0e1a?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Next, there is that really annoying word for \u2018university\u2019 \u2013 waayyyy too many syllables. Let\u2019s shorten it to get:<\/p>\n<p>\u0e2d\u0e22\u0e32\u0e01\u0e44\u0e1b\u0e40\u0e23\u0e35\u0e22\u0e19\u0e17\u0e35\u0e48\u0e21\u0e2b\u0e32\u0e25\u0e31\u0e22\u0e44\u0e2b\u0e21\u0e04\u0e23\u0e31\u0e1a?<\/p>\n<p>(note that \u0e21\u0e2b\u0e32\u0e25\u0e31\u0e22 is slang for \u0e21\u0e2b\u0e32\u0e27\u0e34\u0e17\u0e22\u0e32\u0e25\u0e31\u0e22)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Beyond learning, there isn\u2019t much else to do at the university. If it\u2019s obvious why you are going, why say it? We also know that a university is a place, so no need to say \u0e17\u0e35\u0e48.<\/p>\n<p>\u0e2d\u0e22\u0e32\u0e01\u0e44\u0e1b\u0e21\u0e2b\u0e32\u0e25\u0e31\u0e22\u0e44\u0e2b\u0e21\u0e04\u0e23\u0e31\u0e1a?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The ending of this sentence is way too polite. You\u2019re just asking your friend this question, so make it easier and say:<\/p>\n<p>\u0e2d\u0e22\u0e32\u0e01\u0e44\u0e1b\u0e21\u0e2b\u0e32\u0e25\u0e31\u0e22\u0e1b\u0e48\u0e32\u0e27?<\/p>\n<p>(note that \u0e1b\u0e48\u0e32\u0e27 is shortened slang for \u0e2b\u0e23\u0e37\u0e2d\u0e40\u0e1b\u0e25\u0e48\u0e32, which is a less polite way of saying \u0e44\u0e2b\u0e21\u0e04\u0e23\u0e31\u0e1a)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Given that I\u2019m presenting a question, do you want to go to the university, the \u2018want\u2019 part is obvious. Why else would I be asking you about going? Get rid of \u0e2d\u0e22\u0e32\u0e01; it\u2019s redundant.<\/p>\n<p>\u0e44\u0e1b\u0e21\u0e2b\u0e32\u0e25\u0e31\u0e22\u0e1b\u0e48\u0e32\u0e27?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say it\u2019s obvious, through context, that we are referring to the university. Perhaps the last sentence or two already brought it up. Why repeat it? Just ask,<\/p>\n<p>\u0e44\u0e1b\u0e1b\u0e48\u0e32\u0e27?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example 3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this example, you\u2019ll be tested on why each sentence is shortened. In each line I\u2019ll modify the sentence, and you must explain why. Check the bottom of this page for answers.<\/p>\n<p>What are you doing right now?<\/p>\n<p>\u0e15\u0e2d\u0e19\u0e19\u0e35\u0e49\u0e04\u0e38\u0e13\u0e17\u0e33\u0e2d\u0e30\u0e44\u0e23\u0e2d\u0e22\u0e39\u0e48\u0e19\u0e30\u0e04\u0e30?<\/p>\n<p>1. \u0e04\u0e38\u0e13\u0e17\u0e33\u0e2d\u0e30\u0e44\u0e23\u0e2d\u0e22\u0e39\u0e48\u0e19\u0e30\u0e04\u0e30?<\/p>\n<p>2. \u0e17\u0e33\u0e2d\u0e30\u0e44\u0e23\u0e2d\u0e22\u0e39\u0e48\u0e19\u0e30\u0e04\u0e30?<\/p>\n<p>3. \u0e17\u0e33\u0e2d\u0e30\u0e44\u0e23\u0e2d\u0e22\u0e39\u0e48?<\/p>\n<p>4. \u0e17\u0e33\u0e2d\u0e30\u0e44\u0e23?<\/p>\n<p>5. \u0e17\u0e33\u0e44\u0e23?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>1. It\u2019s clear she means \u2018right now\u2019, and not at any other time.<\/p>\n<p>2. She is speaking to you, so it\u2019s obvious she means \u2018you\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>3. As a friend, she doesn\u2019t need to be super polite.<\/p>\n<p>4. \u0e2d\u0e22\u0e39\u0e48 is superfluous, removed for the same reason as #1<\/p>\n<p>5. \u0e44\u0e23 is shortened slang for \u0e2d\u0e30\u0e44\u0e23<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thai as found in books is not the same as spoken Thai.
