{"id":16,"date":"2010-07-28T19:52:42","date_gmt":"2010-07-28T19:52:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/thai\/?p=16"},"modified":"2010-08-14T15:35:15","modified_gmt":"2010-08-14T15:35:15","slug":"political-responses-to-thai-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/thai\/political-responses-to-thai-protests\/","title":{"rendered":"Political Responses to Thai Protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Between my last post and this one (the dates don&#8217;t match the actual writing date), Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva <strong>\u0e2d\u0e20\u0e34\u0e2a\u0e34\u0e17\u0e18\u0e34\u0e4c \u0e40\u0e27\u0e0a\u0e0a\u0e32\u0e0a\u0e35\u0e27\u0e30<\/strong> ordered a crackdown on the protesters camped out.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister is translated as <strong>\u0e19\u0e32\u0e22\u0e01\u0e23\u0e31\u0e10\u0e21\u0e19\u0e15\u0e23\u0e35<\/strong>, but in the newspapers you&#8217;ll only see it in the short version, <strong>\u0e19\u0e32\u0e22\u0e01\u0e2f <\/strong>(naa1 yok4).<\/p>\n<p>For those familiar with what happened, it was complete chaos. The videos you can find online make it feel like a warzone. Both the protesters and the military exchanged live rounds, rubber bullets, tear gas, and grenades. In the end, 24 people died and over 900 were injured.<\/p>\n<p>The word for gun is<strong> \u0e1b\u0e37\u0e19<\/strong>. There are two ways you can say bullet in Thai. The first is &#8216;gun baby&#8217;, or &#8216;<strong>\u0e25\u0e39\u0e01\u0e1b\u0e37\u0e19<\/strong>&#8216;. You can also say &#8216;<strong>\u0e01\u0e23\u0e30\u0e2a\u0e38\u0e19<\/strong>&#8216;, although it\u2019s not as commonly used. For a rubber bullet, just add &#8216;<strong>\u0e22\u0e32\u0e07<\/strong>&#8216; (rubber) at the end to get<strong> \u0e01\u0e23\u0e30\u0e2a\u0e38\u0e19\u0e22\u0e32\u0e07<\/strong>. Just don&#8217;t get shot by one at close range.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Thai protest hit by grenade attacks\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C8ou-_pdnds?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Tear gas is a direct translation, combing the words for tear <strong>\u0e19\u0e49\u0e33\u0e15\u0e32 <\/strong>and gas <strong>\u0e41\u0e01\u0e4a\u0e2a<\/strong>, to get <strong>\u0e41\u0e01\u0e4a\u0e2a<\/strong><strong>\u0e19\u0e49\u0e33\u0e15\u0e32<\/strong>. The word for grenade is <strong>\u0e19\u0e49\u0e2d\u0e22\u0e2b\u0e19\u0e48\u0e32\u0e40\u0e2b\u0e25\u0e47\u0e01<\/strong>. Since the word for explode is <strong>\u0e23\u0e30\u0e40\u0e1a\u0e34\u0e14<\/strong>, don&#8217;t confuse grenade with the word for bomb, or <strong>\u0e25\u0e39\u0e01\u0e23\u0e30\u0e40\u0e1a\u0e34\u0e14<\/strong>. There have been repeated reports of grenades going off for the last two plus years.<\/p>\n<p>People injured during an event like this are called <strong>\u0e1c\u0e39\u0e49\u0e1a\u0e32\u0e14\u0e40\u0e08\u0e47\u0e1a<\/strong> or <strong>\u0e1c\u0e39\u0e49\u0e40\u0e08\u0e47\u0e1a\u0e1b\u0e48\u0e27\u0e22<\/strong>. There were 24 <strong>\u0e1c\u0e39\u0e49\u0e40\u0e2a\u0e35\u0e22\u0e0a\u0e35\u0e27\u0e34\u0e15 <\/strong>(people who lost their life). If people were hurt or killed, you&#8217;d use the word <strong>\u0e23\u0e32\u0e22<\/strong> as the unit word.<\/p>\n<p>There were 3 people injured and 4 people killed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0e21\u0e35\u0e1c\u0e39\u0e49\u0e1a\u0e32\u0e14\u0e40\u0e08\u0e47\u0e1a3\u0e23\u0e32\u0e22 \u0e1c\u0e39\u0e49\u0e40\u0e2a\u0e35\u0e22\u0e0a\u0e35\u0e27\u0e34\u0e154\u0e23\u0e32\u0e22<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/04\/10\/world\/asia\/11thai.html?_r=1\" aria-label=\"11thai.600\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" \/ src=\"http:\/\/graphics8.nytimes.com\/images\/2009\/04\/11\/world\/11thai.600.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the <strong>\u0e19\u0e1b\u0e0a <\/strong>is convinced the current <strong>\u0e23\u0e31\u0e10\u0e1a\u0e32\u0e25<\/strong> is corrupt (hope you remember those <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/thai\/language-protester-red-shirts-thailand\/\" target=\"_blank\">words from the previous lesson<\/a><\/strong>), accusing them of double standards (<strong>\u0e2a\u0e2d\u0e07\u0e21\u0e32\u0e15\u0e23\u0e10\u0e32\u0e19<\/strong>), they want parliament to be dissolved to force fresh elections (<strong>\u0e40\u0e25\u0e37\u0e2d\u0e01\u0e15\u0e31\u0e49\u0e07<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>The term for dissolving parliament is <strong>\u0e22\u0e38\u0e1a\u0e2a\u0e20\u0e32<\/strong>. You&#8217;ll see this everywhere, on headbands, bumper stickers, giant posters.
