The word \u2018Gaw3\u2019 \u0e01\u0e47 is one of the top 100 Thai words you should learn, given how common it is. I\u2019ve already written a detailed article on the uses of gaw3 here:<\/span><\/p>\n

The word has another case which I didn\u2019t mention before. In this case, it\u2019s as if you are determining the answer to a question half-way through your answer. By saying it this way, you are implying you hadn\u2019t thought about the answer before being asked about it.<\/p>\n

For example, let\u2019s say in English I ask,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201dAre you hungry?\u201d<\/p>\n

If you hadn\u2019t thought through the answer before speaking, you\u2019d say something like,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201dWell . . . uh . . . yea I guess so.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Thai, it\u2019ll be:<\/span><\/p>\n

You simply take the word from the question, repeat it once to acknowledge the question, follow it with \u2018gaw\u2019, and then finally give your answer.<\/p>\n

If you weren\u2019t hungry, then you\u2019d say:<\/span><\/p>\n

One last thing before I finish this article . . . I have no idea why \u0e01\u0e47 is spelled as it is. It totally violates Thai spelling rules. If I were to invent the Thai language, I would have spelled it as \u0e01\u0e49\u0e2d.
