It&#8217;s <strong>Makha Bucha Day<\/strong>\u00a0(\u0e27\u0e31\u0e19\u0e21\u0e32\u0e06\u0e1a\u0e39\u0e0a\u0e32 &#8211; wan maa-k\u00e1-boo-chaaa), an important Buddhist festival held on the full moon of the third month according to the Thai calendar. In Thai, &#8220;<em>makha<\/em>&#8221; is the name given to the third month, and &#8220;<em>bucha<\/em>&#8221; means &#8220;to honor\/venerate.&#8221; Thus, Makha Bucha is a day to honor Buddha and his teachings.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2332\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/thai\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2015\/03\/N.-Thailand-123.jpg\" aria-label=\"N. Another name is the Fourfold Assembly because of four auspicious elements to this gathering of monks:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>All 1,250 were\u00a0<em>arhats<\/em> (enlightened saints).<\/li>\n<li>All of them were ordained by Buddha himself.<\/li>\n<li>They assembled by themselves\u00a0as if by chance. No call had been made for them to do so.<\/li>\n<li>It was the full moon day of the Makha month.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>During this sermon, Buddha instructed the arhats to do only good, not commit any sins, and to purify their minds. The monks took the message of Buddha and helped to spread it, an important step in the development of Buddhism as a religion.<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center\">How Thais Celebrate<\/h1>\n<div id=\"attachment_2326\" style=\"width: 498px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/thai\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2015\/03\/N.-Thailand-134.jpg\" aria-label=\"N. On this day especially, Thais are supposed to follow the teachings of the Buddha and the Five Precepts &#8211; that means no Sangsom or visits to go-go bars. In addition to abstaining from worldly evils, there are a few other things that are to be done on Makha Bucha.\u00a0<strong>Making merit<\/strong> (\u0e17\u0e33\u0e1a\u0e38\u0e0d &#8211; tam bun) is an important part of this day, and many people do it by giving alms to monks in the morning.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2331\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter post-item__attachment\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/thai\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2015\/03\/N.-Thailand-128.jpg\" aria-label=\"N. Called <em>wian thian<\/em> (\u0e01\u0e32\u0e23\u0e40\u0e27\u0e35\u0e22\u0e19\u0e40\u0e17\u0e35\u0e22\u0e19 &#8211; gaan wian tian),\u00a0the monks and congregation will hold candles,\u00a0incense, and\/or flowers and make three circles around the ordination hall in a clockwise manner. This represents the <strong>Three Jewels of Buddhism<\/strong> (\u0e1e\u0e23\u0e30\u0e23\u0e31\u0e15\u0e19\u0e15\u0e23\u0e31\u0e22 &#8211; pr\u00e1 r\u00e1t-dt\u00e0-n\u00e1-dtrai). the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Upon returning from our day out at the <a title=\"How to Choose an Elephant Camp in Chiang Mai\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/thai\/chiang-mai-elephant-camps\/\">elephant camp<\/a>, we were surprised to find out it was a Buddhist holiday. The news finally reached us when we were trying to go get a drink and realized every shop had its coolers locked and all bars were closed. While we were looking to party that night, I always relish random cultural opportunities. And so to the temple we went!
