This came four years after he was crowned as the ninth monarch of the Chakri Dynasty when his elder brother died. Based on ancient royal traditions from India, the five principal royal regalia are presented to the monarch &#8211; the royal crown, sword, staff, the ancient fan, and a pair of royal shoes.<\/p>\n<p>The current king is deeply admired and revered in Thailand &#8211; his face adorns every coin and bank note, portraits of him can be seen just about everywhere, and everyone stands when the Royal Anthem is played before movies. Called <b>Sansoen Phra Barami<\/b> (<span lang=\"th\">\u0e2a\u0e23\u0e23\u0e40\u0e2a\u0e23\u0e34\u0e0d\u0e1e\u0e23\u0e30\u0e1a\u0e32\u0e23\u0e21\u0e35<\/span> &#8211;\u00a0s\u0103n-s\u0115rn pr\u00e1 baa-r\u00e1-mee), it was written in 1913 and remains an important part of Thai culture. He&#8217;s been in the hospital since October when he had his gallbladder removed, and he very rarely makes public appearances these days. There&#8217;s much speculation about Thailand&#8217;s future after Bhumibol, as his son (the crown prince) is not quite as revered amongst the Thai people. He did however make a surprise appearance today for the ceremony, greeted by throngs of loyal supporters and chants of\u00a0 &#8220;<strong>Long live the king<\/strong>!&#8221; (\u0e17\u0e23\u0e07\u0e1e\u0e23\u0e30\u0e40\u0e08\u0e23\u0e34\u0e0d &#8211; song pr\u00e1 j\u00e0-rern).
