Shocking, yes?<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ve probably learned by now that the word <strong>\u0e44\u0e21\u0e48 <\/strong>means \u2018no\u2019, and the word for \u2018no\u2019 in Thai means exactly as it does in English. You\u2019ve probably learned, or found in a Thai-English dictionary, that <strong>\u0e43\u0e0a\u0e48 <\/strong>(chai, falling tone 3)\u00a0means \u2018yes\u2019. That however isn\u2019t correct. <strong>\u0e43\u0e0a\u0e48<\/strong> does *not* mean \u2018yes\u2019. It means \u2018correct&#8217;. Pun not intended . . .<\/p>\n<p>an incorrect usage of the word <strong>\u0e43\u0e0a\u0e48<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>\u0e2b\u0e34\u0e27\u0e44\u0e2b\u0e21? Are you hungry?<\/p>\n<p>\u0e43\u0e0a\u0e48\u0e04\u0e23\u0e31\u0e1a Correct.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, that makes absolutely no sense. Correct what?<\/p>\n<p>In order to say \u2018yes\u2019, you must understand the question asked. Unfortunately that means no nodding your head and saying <strong>\u0e43\u0e0a\u0e48<\/strong>, because it\u2019ll mark you as clueless. To say \u2018yes,\u2019 repeat the question but remove the question word at the end.<\/p>\n<p>\u0e2b\u0e34\u0e27\u0e44\u0e2b\u0e21? Are you hungry?<\/p>\n<p>\u0e2b\u0e34\u0e27 Yes, I\u2019m hungry.<\/p>\n<p>\u0e0a\u0e2d\u0e1a\u0e40\u0e02\u0e32\u0e44\u0e2b\u0e21? Do you like him?<\/p>\n<p>\u0e0a\u0e2d\u0e1a Yes, I like him.<\/p>\n<p>\u0e08\u0e30\u0e21\u0e32\u0e40\u0e21\u0e37\u0e2d\u0e07\u0e44\u0e17\u0e22\u0e44\u0e2b\u0e21? Will you come to Thailand?<\/p>\n<p>\u0e08\u0e30\u0e21\u0e32 Yes, I\u2019ll come.<\/p>\n<p>There is one instance you can use <strong>\u0e43\u0e0a\u0e48 <\/strong>to mean yes, and that\u2019s when the question involves the word <strong>\u0e43\u0e0a\u0e48<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u0e2b\u0e34\u0e27\u0e43\u0e0a\u0e48\u0e44\u0e2b\u0e21? You\u2019re hungry, correct?<\/p>\n<p>\u0e43\u0e0a\u0e48 Correct.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do you say \u2018yes\u2019 in Thai?
