In English, the words \u2018famous\u2019 and \u2018popular\u2019 are similar, yet still have different meanings.<\/p>\n

\u2018Popular\u2019, according to a dictionary says, \u201cregarded with favor, approval, or affection by people in general.\u201d For the purposes of this article I want you to assume it means \u201cwell known and liked by a large number of people\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u2018Famous\u2019, according to a dictionary says, \u201chaving a widespread reputation, usually of a favorable nature; renowned\u201d. For the purposes of this article I want you to assume the type of famous typical of a movie star.<\/p>\n

However in Thai there is no distinction between these two types. You\u2019d use the same \u2018famous\u2019 to describe the kid in your class who has a lot of friends that you\u2019d use to describe Lady Gaga or Saddam Hussein.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ll go over the various ways to say famous\/popular below. Keep in mind that they all generally mean the same thing, and so can be interpreted as either \u2018famous\u2019 or \u2018popular\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u0e02\u0e36\u0e49\u0e19\u0e0a\u0e37\u0e48\u0e2d, \u0e44\u0e14\u0e49\u0e0a\u0e37\u0e48\u0e2d \u2013 kuen3 cheua3, dai3 cheua3 – To become famous, to \u2018get a name\u2019<\/p>\n
\u0e14\u0e31\u0e07 \u2013 dang1 – famous (this word also means \u2018loud\u2019)<\/p>\n
\u0e0a\u0e37\u0e48\u0e2d\u0e14\u0e31\u0e07 \u2013 cheua3 dang1 \u2013 famous (also means \u2018loud name\u2019)<\/p>\n
\u0e21\u0e35\u0e0a\u0e37\u0e48\u0e2d\u0e40\u0e2a\u0e35\u0e22\u0e07 \u2013 mee1 cheua3 siang5 \u2013 is famous (also means to \u2018have a name\u2019)<\/p>\n
\u0e40\u0e02\u0e32\u0e44\u0e21\u0e48\u0e14\u0e31\u0e07 \u2013 kao5 mai3 dang1 \u2013 He isn\u2019t famous.<\/p>\n
\u0e40\u0e02\u0e32\u0e44\u0e21\u0e48\u0e14\u0e31\u0e07\u0e21\u0e32\u0e01 \u2013 kao5 mai3 dang1 maak3 \u2013 He isn\u2019t very famous.<\/p>\n

So what if you just want to say \u2018popular\u2019? There is no single word you can use, so you\u2019ll have to actually spell it out in full . . .<\/p>\n

Just listen to see how many times you can pick up the word \u0e40\u0e0a\u0e37\u0e48\u0e2d\u0e40\u0e2a\u0e35\u0e22\u0e07.<\/p>\n
