Pakistan’s cricket is often hailed as mysterious and unpredictable. Qualities the cricket team displayed in the ICC Champions Trophy held in England which they won thrashing their arch rival India by a record margin of 180 runs! That Pakistan lifted the trophy was surprising enough – at eighth in the world they began as the lowest-ranked team in the tournament – but it is the way they demolished the strong favorites will live long in the memory.

A quarter-of-a-century ago, Pakistan came from the brink of elimination to win the 1992 Cricket World Cup, inspired by then captain Imran Khan. Here, they recovered from a humbling defeat by India in their opening game with similar tenacity.

Having failed to reach 250 hitherto in the tournament, Pakistan posted 338 runs for four on the back of a dashing century by Fakhar Zaman, who slammed 114 off 106 balls, then bowled out India in only 30.3 overs on the back of Mohammad Amir’s opening spell.

The cricket team was given a hero’s welcome upon returning home and saw thousands storming to see a glimpse of the trophy in the hands of their captain! The air was filled with the celebration mood and the party in the streets continued for several days.
