For years, I observed this phenomenon and I now consider it a beautiful gift from mother nature to all mothers in the world. We all have a mother, and for many of us the first word we learned to speak as a child is \u201cMother\u201d. Even when learning other languages, the word \u201cmother\u201d is one of the first vocabulary words learned in memory exercises.<\/p>\n<p>Generally, <em>M\u1eb9<\/em> is the Vietnamese word for \u201cMother\u201d. However, each region has its own words for \u201cMother\u201d. Knowing how one identifies his\/her \u201cMother\u201d naturally, you could tell a lot about that person\u2019s family background. Let\u2019s test to see how many words for \u201cMother\u201d that you recognize. These are the ones I know.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NORTHERN REGION<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>M\u1eb9<\/em>: Most commonly used nationwide, a modern word for \u201cMother\u201d, derived from the French word \u201cM\u00e8re\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><em>M\u1ee3<\/em>: A derivative from \u201cM\u1eb9\u201d that is more popular in Hanoi and among the \u201cbourgeois\u201d class in the city.<\/li>\n<li><em>Bu<\/em>: This word is more popular in the countryside, especially in Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh Province.<\/li>\n<li><em>B\u1ea7m<\/em>: A derivative from \u201cBu\u201d, still being used in B\u1eafc Ninh Province.<\/li>\n<li><em>U<\/em>: A derivative from \u201cBu\u201d, still being used in H\u00e0 Nam Province.<\/li>\n<li><em>\u0110\u1ebb<\/em>, <em>C\u00e1i, N\u1ea1<\/em>: Old words that are only found in literature.<\/li>\n<li>M\u1eabu th\u00e2n: Is an old Sino-Vietnamese word that was used among the aristocrat families in the past century. It is only used in literature today.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>CENTRAL REGION<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_289\" style=\"width: 336px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-289\" class=\" wp-image-289\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/vietnamese\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/40\/2021\/05\/IRIS-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"637\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-289\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo taken and used with permission from Kandle Dart<\/p><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><em>M\u1ea1<\/em>: This word derived from the Chinese word \u201cMama\u201d \u5988\u5988, commonly used in Central provinces.<\/li>\n<li><em>M\u1ec7<\/em>: Phonetically variation of <em>M\u1ea1<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><em>Me<\/em>: Phonetically variation of <em>M\u1eb9<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>SOUTHERN REGION<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>M\u00e1<\/em>: This word derived from the Chinese word \u201cMama\u201d \u5988\u5988, commonly used in Southern provinces<\/li>\n<li><em>V\u00fa<\/em>: Old word, used more in the countryside.<\/li>\n<li><em>M\u0103ng<\/em>: It came from the French word \u201cMaman\u201d, used more among the French educated families before 1975.<\/li>\n<li><em>Me<\/em>: Phonetic variation of M\u1eb9.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In short, the most common words for \u201cMother\u201d are <em>M\u1eb9<\/em> (Northern)<em>, M\u00e1 <\/em>(Southern)<em>, <\/em>and <em>M\u1ea1 <\/em>(Central).<em> M\u1eb9<\/em> is the universal one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WHEN IS MOTHER\u2019S DAY IN VIETNAM?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vietnam doesn\u2019t really have a particular national Mother\u2019s Day like the United States. They honor their mothers along with other significant women in their lives on March 8, International Women\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>For people who practice Buddhism, they celebrate their mothers during <em>L\u1ec5 Vu Lan<\/em> (Vu Lan\u2019s Celebration day). <em>L\u1ec5 Vu Lan<\/em> is one of the main Buddhist holidays, falling on the 15<sup>th<\/sup> of July of the lunar calendar year. It\u2019s a day for children to demonstrate their filial piety to their mothers.<\/p>\n<p>Being Communist, Vietnam is officially an atheist country. However, the Vietnamese generally are not atheists. Buddhism once was the official Vietnamese national religion and still is the main religion that the majority of Vietnamese practice.
