This month, it\u2019s the fathers turn to be celebrated, and their \u201cglorious\u201d day this year is on Sunday, June 20<sup>th<\/sup>. Along with the word \u201cmother\u201d, \u201cfather\u201d also is one of the words that any child would say when he\/she starts learning how to speak.<\/p>\n<p>There are many different words for \u201cfather\u201d in Vietnamese. Each region would have its own word. For example, people in the north identify their \u201cfather\u201d as <em>b\u1ed1, b\u1ecd, b\u00f5, th\u1ea7y, \u00f4ng c\u1ee5, th\u00e2n sinh, th\u00e2n ph\u1ee5<\/em>; people from the central may identifyn \u201cfather\u201d as <em>ba<\/em> or <em>cha<\/em>. People from the south may call \u201cfather\u201d <em>t\u00eda <\/em>or<em> \u00f4ng gi\u00e0<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In general, the universal<\/strong><strong> word for \u201cfather\u201d is <em>cha<\/em> and <em>b\u1ed1<\/em> (commonly used for northerners) or <em>ba <\/em>(commonly used for the southerners).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are different words for \u201cFather\u2019s Day\u201d in Vietnamese:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<em>Ng\u00e0y<\/em><em> c\u1ee7a Cha\u201d<\/em> (pure Vietnamese)<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201c<\/em><em>Ng\u00e0y T\u1eeb Ph\u1ee5\u201d <\/em>(Sino-Vietnamese word)<\/li>\n<li><em>\u201c<\/em><em>Ng\u00e0y Th\u00e2n Ph\u1ee5 <\/em>\u201d (Sino-Vietnamese)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Vietnam doesn\u2019t have a designated day for <em>Ng\u00e0y<\/em><em> c\u1ee7a Cha<\/em> like in the United States. Instead, it shows its filial piety to the father on <em>L\u1ec5 Vu Lan<\/em>, one of the major Buddhist celebrations, and\/or on the T\u1ebft Nguy\u00ean \u0110\u00e1n (Vietnamese Lunar New Year) occasion, or on <em>ng\u00e0y sinh nh\u1eadt c\u1ee7a cha<\/em> (father\u2019s birthday).<\/p>\n<p>For <em>ng\u01b0\u1eddi<\/em><em> C\u00f4ng Gi\u00e1o<\/em> (Catholics), I just learned <em>Ng\u00e0y<\/em><em> c\u1ee7a Cha<\/em> is celebrated on the Feast of St. Joseph on March 19.<\/p>\n<p>For the Vietnamese in the United States, they pretty much follow the same western tradition and honor their fathers on Father\u2019s Day, the third Sunday of June. Children gather and bring food or cook their father\u2019s favorites to eat together in celebration. Because it\u2019s the summer time, steak and seafood BBQ are pretty common meal menus.<\/p>\n<p>As gifts for <em>Ng\u00e0y<\/em><em> c\u1ee7a Cha<\/em>, I think for fathers who have limited income, the most practical gift that the children can give is <em>ti\u1ec1n<\/em> (money), along with fruit, food, supplemental herbal medicines, wine, tools, etc. Here are some common gifts to give:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>C\u00e0 v\u1ea1t (tie)<\/li>\n<li>\u0110\u1ed3ng h\u1ed3 \u0111eo tay (hand watch)<\/li>\n<li>Gi\u00e2y th\u1eaft l\u01b0ng (belt)<\/li>\n<li>M\u00e1y c\u1ea1o r\u00e2u (electric shaver)<\/li>\n<li>Vi\u1ebft m\u00e1y cao c\u1ea5p (luxury pen)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My father, like all Vietnamese fathers, wanted one commonly desired gift that he expected from us when we were young: to show him the best score that we could obtain in school. As we grew older and moved away from our parents, all he wanted was simply a phone call to let him know how we were doing. Really, just being present with him on Father\u2019s Day was already the gift that made me happy.<\/p>\n<p>My father is no longer with us.
