Vietnam is not an exception. Indeed, officially and unofficially, she has been known by more than a dozen names in its history. Each <em>tri\u1ec1u \u0111\u1ea1i<\/em> (dynasty) may want to change its <em>qu\u1ed1c hi\u1ec7u<\/em>. Do I know them all? Yes, because any kid who grew up in Vietnam like I did, had to learn these <em>qu\u1ed1c hi\u1ec7u<\/em> during history lessons from elementary all the way through high school. Well, that doesn\u2019t mean I would remember to list all of them in the correct period. Most names have the word <strong>\u201c<em>\u0110\u1ea1i<\/em>&#8221; or\/and <em>Vi\u1ec7t<\/em>\u201d or\/and \u201c<em>Nam<\/em>\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Q<em>u\u1ed1c hi\u1ec7u (<\/em>country name) <em><strong>\u0110\u1ea1i Vi\u1ec7t <\/strong><\/em>(Great Viet) has the record of being used in the longest time,\u00a0 for <strong>over 700 years!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Meaning of the current name <em><strong>Vi\u1ec7t Nam:\u00a0<\/strong>Viet<\/em> means the Viet people. <em>Nam<\/em> means the south. Together, it means the Viet of the Southern.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>MY THOUGHTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>By including the word <strong>\u201c<em>\u0110\u1ea1i<\/em>&#8221; <\/strong>(Great)\/Big) in the past country names, the Vietnamese ancestors showed their pride and the ambition to expand their territory. As a matter of fact, the current territory of Vietnam was the expansion to other southern neighboring countries that have long gone for some past centuries ago.<\/li>\n<li>Will the country change her name again and break away from the word \u201c<em>Vi\u1ec7t<\/em>\u201d or\/and \u201c<em>Nam<\/em>\u201d in the future? Who knows?
