This is not just a matter between the fianc\u00e9 and fianc\u00e9e. It involves the formal engagement and participation of both families.<\/p>\n<p>To the girl\u2019s family, this ceremony is even more important than the wedding ceremony because this event marks the official bond between the two families, and announces the wedding plan. The ceremony is performed at the fianc\u00e9\u2019s home. Therefore, the girl\u2019s parents host the event. The house would be decorated in festive colors. It is a chance for the girls\u2019 parents to showcase the hospitality to both families and their relatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ANCESTOR WORSHIP TABLE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The ancestor worship table would shine with at least these essential polished brass objects below the pictures of the deceased maternal and paternal ancestors of the fianc\u00e9:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>M\u1ed9t<\/em><em> c\u1eb7p <\/em><em>b\u00ecnh<\/em><em> hoa<\/em> (a pair of flower vases)<\/li>\n<li><em>M\u1ed9t<\/em><em> c\u1eb7p ch\u00e2n n\u1ebfn<\/em> (A pair of candle holders)<\/li>\n<li><em>M\u1ed9t<\/em><em> l\u01b0 h\u01b0\u01a1ng<\/em> (an incense burner censer)<\/li>\n<li><em>M\u1ed9t b\u00ecnh nhang<\/em> (an incense stick pot holder)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is an important place where the young couple light the candles, the incense sticks, and bow to pay respect to the ancestors together.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REPRESENTATIVE PERSON<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before the event, each family would choose their respective <em>ng\u01b0\u1eddi \u0111\u1ea1i di\u1ec7n<\/em> (representative). Usually, it\u2019s an important person with high ranking in the family or a relative who is eloquent and has the ability to control the ceremonial\u2019s flow. The gift portions, per <em>nh\u00e0 g\u00e1i<\/em>\u2019s request, were discussed before the engagement. Gifts are placed in round tin can boxes or trays, covered in red cloth, and always accumulated in odd numbers. Usually in the number of 3, 5 ,7, 9, or 11, depending on <em>nh\u00e0<\/em><em> trai<\/em>\u2019s wealth status. They line up at least 25 yards away then start walking to the house of <em>nh\u00e0 g\u00e1i<\/em> at a pre-arranged, auspicious hour (usually between 11AM-1PM). At the entrance, a matching number of girls (ideally single) from <em>nh\u00e0 g\u00e1i<\/em> line up to receive the gifts from <em>nh\u00e0 <\/em><em>trai.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A portion of these gifts will later be returned back to <em>nh\u00e0<\/em><em> trai<\/em>. It\u2019s called <em>l\u1ea1i qu\u1ea3<\/em>. The rest will be distributed to the high ranking relatives of <em>nh\u00e0 g\u00e1i<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>AFTER THE CEREMONY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After all the rituals such as bowing to the ancestor table, serving tea to the grandparents, parents, or the highest-ranking elders of both sides is complete. It\u2019s time for celebration with lots of food, casual chat, and entertainment. Men either also are in \u00e1o d\u00e0i or suits. The fianc\u00e9\u2019s outfit is usually red, pink, or some other vivid colors.
