Usage of Hindi Idioms Posted by on Feb 27, 2011 in Hindi Language

On the request of our reader, I would like to present the usage of the idioms that we discussed in our previous post.

An example sentence is given for each of them along with the equivalent English sentence. Please refer to the previous post “Idioms in Hindi” for the idioms meaning.

1. आँखें चुराना (Aankhein Churana)
जब उसे अपनी गलती का पता चला तब से वो मुझ से आंखें चुला रहा है.
After realizing his own mistake, he try to get away from my sight.

2. आँखो का तारा (Aankhein ka tara)
माँ ने उसे बोला की वही ही उसकी आँखों का तारा है.
Mother told her that only she is beloved to her.

3. मुँह मीठा करना (Muh mitha karna)
जब उनके लड़के को नोबेल शांति पुरष्कार मिला तब वो इतने खुश थे की उन्होंने सभी पड़ोसियों का मुंह मीठा कराया था.
When their son got the Nobel peace prize, they were so happy that they distributed the sweets to all neighbors.

4. चहरा उतरना (Chehra utarna)
जब श्याम को पता चला की वो परिषा में विफल हो गया है तब उसका चहरा उतर गया.
After getting to know that Shyam has failed the examination, he was disappointed.

5. दन्तो तले उंगली दबाना (danto tale ungali dabana)
लोगो नें मोटर साइकिल वालो के करतब देख कर दांतों टेल उंगली दबा ली.
People got so surprized when they saw the bikers stunts.

6. साँस लेना (Sans lena)
जब राम आपने कार्यालय के व्यस्त दिन से आया तभी वो साँस ले पाया.
Only after coming back from a hectic workday of his job, Ram could feel relieved.

7. बात पक्की होना (baat pakki hona)
दो राजनीतिक पार्टियों ने गठबंधन कि बात पक्की की, कि वो एक बड़ी पार्टी बना रहे है.
The two political party has agreed to form a coalition to form a bigger party.

8. बाल-बाल बचना (bal bal bachna)
मैंने आज एक आदमी को देखा जो मरने से बल बल बचा.
Today, I saw a man who just got away close from a fatal accident.

9. अकल का दुश्मन (akal ka dushman)
रमेश कक्षा में जा कर कुछ सिख नहीं सका, लोग सोचते है कि वो अकल का दुश्मन है.
Ramesh could not learn anything from class, people think that he is dumb.

10. जान पर खेलना (jaan par khelna)
रंजित ने आपनी जान पर खेल कर भूकम में दो परिवार को बचाया.
Ranjit saved two family in the earthquake by without fear of his own life.

11. पेट में चूहे कूदना (pet mein chuhe kudna)
माँ, तुमने आज खाने में क्या बनाया है? मेरे पेट में चूहे कूद रहे है!
Mother, what have you cooked today? I am feeling very hungry!

12. आसमान पर चड़ना (aashman par chadna)
क्षेत्रीय विज्ञान पुरस्कार मिलने के बाद, सीता इतनी आसमान पर चढ़ गयी कि अब वह कक्षा में किसी से भी बात नहीं कर रही थी.
After getting the regional science prize, Sita was feeling so proud/arrogant that she will not talk to anyone in the class anymore.

13. आकाश पाताल का अंतर (aakash patal ka aantar)
राम और श्याम के व्यवहार में आकाश पाताल का अंतर है.
The difference in Ram and Shyam’s behavior is of a big difference.

14. हवा से बातें करना (hawa se bate karna)
वह गाड़ी कुछ इस तरह से चला रहा था कि कुछ सेकंड में ही गाड़ी हवा से बातें करने लगी.
He was running the car such that within few seconds it was running at very fast speed.

15. पत्थर की लकीर (patar ki lakir)
उसको को कोई मना नहीं सकता, उसकी बात पत्थर की लकीर है.(मना सकना = able to convince someone)
He is always so firm on his saying that nobody can convince him otherwise.

16. पहाड़ टूट पड़ना (pahad tut padna)
जब मीरा के पति का आचानक देहांत हो गया, मीरा को लगा जेसे कि उसपर पहाड़ टूट पड़ा हो.
When her husband died of sudden death, Meera thought she got into a big trouble.

17. ईद का चाँद होना (id ka chand hona)
वह पूरे वर्ष इतना व्यस्त रहता है कि जब भी दिखता है तो लगता है कि जेसे ईद का चाँद हो.
He is so busy that he could hardly be seen in an entire year.

18. चकमा देना (chakma dena)
लीला इतनी चालाक है कि आपने प्रोफेस्सर को भी चकमा दे दे.
Leela is so clever that she could even deceive her Professor.

19. उल्टी गंगा बहना (ulti ganga behna)
अजित ने आज सबको इतना विनम्र पाया कि उसको समझ नहीं आया कि आज उलटी गंगा केसे बह रही है.
Today, Ajit found everyone to be nice to him, but he could not understood what is so unusual.

20. छ्क्के छुड़ाना (chakke chudana)
भारतीय क्रिकेट टीम ने पाकिस्तानी क्रिकेट ट्राम के छक्के छुड़ा दिए.
Indian cricket team has defeated the Pakistani Cricket team.

21. फूँक फूँक कर कदम रखना (phunk phunk kar kadam rakhna)
दो बार तस्करी करते पकडे जाने के बाद तस्करी गिरोह फूंक फूंक के कदम रखने लगा.
After being caught for two time for smuggling goods, the smuggling group became very careful.

22. दम में दम आना (dam mein dam aana)
जबतक उसने सारी परिषा सफल न कर ली तब तक उसके दम में दम ना आया.
Only after clearing all examinations, he could feel free from his fear of failure in examination.

23. दाँत से दाँत बजाना (dant se dant bajana)
आज ठंड के मौसम के कारण सबके दांत से दांत बजने लगे.
Because of today’s cold weather , everyone is feeling very cold.

24. मुँह में पानी आना (muh mein pani aana) – to be tempted by food
जेसे ही उसने अच्छा खाना देखा उसके मुंह में पानी आ गया.
As soon as he saw the good food, he was so tempted for it.

25. नाक काटना (nak katna)
एरिक ने सबके सामने उसकी नाक काट दी.
Eric has embarrassed him in front of everyone.

26. कमर टूटना (kamar tutna)
बहुत परिशानियों के कारण वह निराश हो गयी.
Because of many problems, she is feeling disappointed.

27. कमर कसना (kamar kasna)
कल मुझे बहुत से काम करने है सो मुझे कमर कस लेनी चाहिए.
Today, I have to do much work therefore I should prepare for it.

28. कलेजा पत्थर का होना (kaleja patar ka hona)
उसका कलेजा पत्थर का है तभी वो आपने ही लड़के को लगातार ख़राब आचरण के कारण त्याग सका.
He is mentally very strong therefore he could abandon his own son for constant bad behavior.

29. दाँत खट्टे करना (dant khate karna)
नयी टीम ने अनुभवी टीम के शतरंज के खेल में दांत खट्टे कर दिए.
New team has defeated the experienced team in the game of Chess.

30. ईंट से ईंट बजाना (int se int bajana)
रोंनी ने मिचेअल को वचन दिया कि वो उसकी ईंट से ईंट बजा देगा.
Ronny has promised Michael that he will destroy him.

      @jade If you meant Dust by Dhool (धूल) then you are fortunate.
      In Hindi, there is an Idiom “सब धूल मिट्टी में मिल जाना (Sab dhool mitti mein mil jana) – something going to waste.
      Example sentence: मैंने बहुत परिश्रम किया मगर सब कुछ धूल मिट्टी में मिल गया (Meine bahut parishram kiya magar sab kuch dhool mitti mein mil gaya) – I worked hard but everything was wasted.

    Metaphors,similes,cliches and idioms all come under figurative language but could you explain what is the basic difference between them with respect to idioms by few giving examples.

    There’s another idiom with “dhool,” jade. This one is “Aankhon me dhool jhonkna,” which means “Dhoka dena”/to deceive. Hope this helps!

    For instance, why do they say pet mei choohe Daud rahe hai?
