Our Solar System, in Thai Posted by on Dec 12, 2011 in Intermediate

Have you ever wanted to talk about astrology/astronomy, or about the latest robot probe sent to Mars? What are the names of the planets?

Just like in English, many of the planet names are the same as the days of the week (Sunday = Sun, Monday = moon, Saturday = Saturn, etc.). If you need a refresher on the days of the week, have a look back at the Thai days of the week article.

Also, note that the names of the planets have the word พระ pra4 in them. It’s perfectly OK to leave it out when speaking or writing the name of the planets. The word daow1 (ดาว) means ‘star’. It can be used to describe pretty much anything that isn’t the Earth or Sun (including asteroids and artificial satellites).

pronunciation

Say day as

Sun พระอาทิตย์ pra4 ah1tit4 Sunday
Sun ตะวัน dta2wan1
Mercury ดาวพระพุธ daow1 pra4 put4 Wednesday
Venus ดาวพระศุกร์ daow1 pra4 suk2 Friday
Earth โลก loak3
Moon พระจันรท์ pra4 jan2 Monday
Mars ดาวพระอังคาร daow1 pra4 ang1 kaan1 Tuesday
Jupiter ดาวพระพฤหัสฯ daow1 pra4 pa4 ruu4 hat2 Thursday
Saturn ดาวพระเสาร์ daow1 pra4 sao5 Saturday
Uranus ดาวพระมฤตยู daow1 pra4 ma4 ruut4 dta2 yuu1 Note: also called ยูเรนัส uu1rey1nat4
Neptune ดาวพระเกตุ daow1 pra4 geht2 Note: also called เนปจูน nep3juun1
Pluto ดาวพระยม daow1 pra4 yom1 yes, I realize it’s no longer formally a planet

There is one note however on the word for ‘Earth’. Usually it is called ‘the World’ in Thai. However, this doesn’t quite work if you find yourself on Mars speaking Thai and want to refer to the Earth . . . so here is how you say ‘the planet Earth’:

the world โลก loak3
planet Earth ดาวเคราะห์โลก daow1 kraw4 loak3
the whole world ทั้งโลก tang4 loak3

Here is a video to help you practice your new vocabulary. See how many words you can pick out. My next post will have more space vocabulary, so come back to this video once again.
