I’m not saying it’s right, but la gueule de bois seems almost inevitable after a big night out. So, in the constant struggle to live my life like the French, what else but to explore… French hangover cures?

Avoir la gueule de bois (to have a hangover) is defined well by medecine-et-sante.com:

“le lendemain d’une soirée très arrosée, le réveil est difficile et même douloureux, la bouche est sèche et pâteuse, la soif est associée à des nausées voire à des vomissements, des vertiges (d’autant que l’alcoolémie n’est pas encore revenue à zéro), et surtout, surtout il existe un marteau piqueur dans la tête qui est prête à exploser !! »

Traduction : The day after a « well-watered » (with alcohol- not sure there’s an equivalent expression en anglais) evening, waking up is difficult and even painful, the mouth is dry and cottony, thirst is associated with nausea, even vomiting, vertigo (as much as the blood alcohol content is not yet back to zero), and especially, especially there’s a jackhammer in one’s head which is ready to explode!!

Lovely. One sees why people look for rèmedes anti-gueule de bois.

Les astuces anti-gueule de bois (anti-hangover tricks) pourraient marcher, ou pas (could work, or not). If you feel like doing some research, just let us know !

-Boire de l’eau: Drink water, « en même temps ou après l’absorption d’alcool pour favoriser son élimination et éviter la déshydratation » (at the same time or after the absorption of alcohol, to encourage its elimination and to avoid dehydration).

I thought this was interesting: « Pour éliminer un toxique le rein doit éliminer aussi de l’eau, ceci explique l’augmentation de la diurèse (le volume des urines) et la déshydratation (paradoxal, non ?) d’où soif et maux de tête. » (To eliminate a toxin the liver must also eliminate water ; this explains the augmentation of diuresis (the volume of urine) and dehydration (paradoxal, no ?) from which come thirst and headaches.) Anyone fasting for Ramadan (if you’re still reading this) can attest to this last point, which I never knew.

More water = fewer maux de têtes!

-Manger: Eat. (Love this one.) “La prise d’aliments concomitante ralentit l’absorption de l’alcool mais n’en diminue pas la quantité totale absorbée » (taking food concomitantly slows the absorption of alcohol but doesn’t diminish the total quantity absorbed).  That’s your responsibility. But eating can help.

 

Et pour prévenir la gueule de bois? To prevent hangovers ?

Prenez des pauses pour manger un peu : des hydrates de carbone et du sucre, notamment. (Take some time out to eat a little : carbohydrates and sugar, notably.) No problem there!

Choisissez le vin blanc plutôt que le rouge, les alcools blancs (vodka, genièvre, rhum blanc, etc.) plutôt que ceux qui sont colorés (cognac, whisky, rhum ambré ou brun, etc.). (Choose white wine over red, white alcohols (vodka, genever/gin, white rum, etc.) over those that are colored (cognac, whisky, amber or brown rum, etc.). Interesting.

Évitez les boissons alcooliques pétillantes et les cocktails qui renferment du soda ou une boisson gazeuse. Les petites bulles accélèrent les effets de l’alcool. (Avoid sparkling alcoholic beverages and cocktails made with soda or a carbonated drink. The little bubbles accelerate the effects of the alcohol.) This is part of why le Champagne is so dangereux. I would also add, avoid straws (les pailles). Bad idea.
