Bonjour beginners! In the last, inaugural Beginner’s Post, we explored the verb avoir (to have). Aujourd’hui (today), another crucial French verb:

Être : to be.

Conjugaison :

Je suis : I am

Tu es : You are (informal)

Il/ elle/ on est : He/ she/ “they” are*

Nous sommes : We are

Vous êtes : You are (formal)

Ils/ elles sont : They (masculine or mixed genders)/ they (feminine) are

* As in, “they say it will rain today”- the general “they”

Quoique soit votre réponse initiale (whatever your initial response is), you’d need être to understand and answer the question. Être shows up all the time. It’s the blue jeans of the French language: always handy and impossible to live without once you’ve discovered it.

What else can you do with être? (Or, par contre, what can’t you do without it?)

—Se décrire (describe oneself)

Last time, I used avoir pour me décrire (to describe myself): J’ai les cheveux blonds (I have blond hair).

Now, we can use être for a simpler and more natural sentence: Je suis blonde (I am blond).

Other adjectives you might use to describe yourself:

Je suis grand(e) / petit(e): I am tall / short

–Add ‘e’ to describe a female person or feminine object. For example, La tour Eiffel est grande: The Eiffel Tower is tall.

Je suis gentil(le) / méchant(e) : I am nice / mean

I have a pretty simple view of people, I guess: Je ne suis pas compliquée (I am not complicated).

To form a negation, put ne before the conjugated verb, and pas after it. Par exemple:

 

Je ne suis pas grande: I am not tall.

Nous ne sommes pas célèbres: We are not famous.

Mais attention, you can’t write “Il ne est pas gentil.” The first ‘e’ becomes an apostrophe:

Il n’est pas gentil.

Elle n’est pas ma soeur (She is not my sister).

Good for negation? There are more things we can describe with être: professions, par exemple.

Elle est médecin : She is a doctor. (Or, Brennan est médecin : Brennan is a doctor.)

Mon oncle est ingénieur : My uncle is an engineer. (Il est ingénieur, or Robert est ingénieur, are also correct.)

Ma meilleure amie est boulangère : My best friend is a baker (sadly pas vrai).

Notez que there is no “a” or “an”: Elle est médecin, not Elle est une médecin.

 

One final important use of être: to describe the status quo, or the way things are. Use “il est,” it is, where “it” is just general. Par exemple,

 

Il est humide : It is humid (the weather).

Il est probable que… : It is probable that…

Il est nécessaire que… : It is necessary that…

Il est facile de… : It is easy to…

Il est difficule de… : It is difficult to…

Il est important… : It is important…

Again, you will use être as much as any word, and it’s essential to be comfortable with it—first the conjugation, and then you’ll be ready to deploy it! Allez, pratiquez!
