Coeur de Pirate (And A Goncourt Announcement) Posted by on Nov 20, 2017 in Music

My husband is a big fan of Nouvelle Star, the French equivalent of the British show Pop Idol. It is similar in format to The X Factor and other music reality shows, where a jury of famous and/or influential people in the music industry vote on whether or not to allow musicians through to the next level, and eventually to the live shows, where an audience will vote for the finalists.

One of the judges for this year’s Nouvelle Star is a Canadian singer and songwriter known by her stage name Coeur de Pirate (“Pirate’s Heart”). Béatrice Martin was born in Montreal and sings mostly in French. She has attained enormous fame not only in Quebec and French-speaking Canada, but also in the hexagon as well. One of Coeur de Pirate’s most famous songs is called “Ensemble,” or “Together.” You can find its paroles, or lyrics, and the music video for the song below.  She has also released some songs in both English and French, including the song “Carry On.” In addition to being on Nouvelle Star, Coeur de Pirate is also making headlines for having recently made an impromptu performance at Montreal’s Trudeau Airport. You can listen to Coeur de Pirate’s soft voice and moving lyrics below.

*A special note: Last week, I noted that the special Prix de Goncourt des Lycéens would be announced shortly. The winner has, indeed, been announced … drumroll, please … it’s Véronique Olmi for Bakhita!*

Ensemble

Côte contre côte nos corps vibrent par temps
Et dans cette course sans dérive
On tombe presque hors-champ
Tête contre tête tu m’as vaincue juste à temps
Together (English Translation)
Side to side our bodies vibrate on time
And in this competition without anger
We go almost out of sight
And in your destructive smiles
nothing but your ego takes over
And you reduce us endlessly in your tortures
And without shame you’re breaking yourself, you don’t understand
’cause we used to have a beautiful story, you wouldn’t deny it
Your screams destroy the walls of your appartment in stead
In order to reach my heart, that’s dying a bit more with every moment
’cause together, we’re chaotic rhyme
And the man that you are isn’t more than a dilemma
Because what you are is rhyme with regret
As far I’m concerned, I’ll only have those who remain forever
Head to head you defeated me just on time
And when you came back
You weren’t the same
And your lies spoil the man you could be
And my wounds open a bit more each time it’s gone to your head again
And shamelssly, you’re breaking yourself, you don’t understand
that you’re ruining a beautiful story, I won’t deny it
Our screams destroy the walls of your appartment in stead
In order to reach the love, that’s dying a bit more with every moment
’cause together, we’re chaotic rhyme
And the man that you are isn’t more than a dilemma
Because what you are is rhyme with regret
As far I’m concerned, I’ll only have those who remain forever
