Do You Want a French Mustache—Or an Austrian Beard?! Posted by Hichem on May 9, 2014 in Culture, Music, Vocabulary
In less than 24 hours, the 2014 Eurovision grande finale will be taking place.
Six pays (six countries) are en lice (battling it out) for la première place.
What does France has to offer this time, you may reluctantly wonder?
A group whose chanson (song) seems to hint at the general zeitgeist reigning a bit everywhere in the world: the “I-got-many-things-but-I-still-want-more” kind of syndrome.
Of course, without reading too much into it, their song can be viewed as a tongue-in-cheek satire of the “jamais contents, jamais satisfaits“ (“never happy, never satisfied”) kind of people…
Fine, bien essayé (good try.)
But will that be suffisant (enough) for them to earn the first prize?
Peut-être (Maybe)…
Unless, of course, the European jury decides that, instead of a French moustache, they would instead have an Austrian barbe (beard) ! ! !
“Oh, la barbe!!“
When French people are freaked out, or feel like they had it enough with something, they can scream something like: “Oh, la barbe!“, literally meaning “Oh, the beard!”
What you see above is the Autrichien (Austrian) bearded-lady competing with the French group “Twin Twin” in tomrorow’s Eurovision finale…
Why the beard though?
Well, of course, you can interpret it in many ways, but, in all fairness, Austrians should have the right to come up with something new: The last time they offered a mustached man on a European stage, some eighty years ago, it wasn’t exactly a smashing success…
At any rate, que le meilleur -ou le pire- gagne (may the best -or the worst- win)
