In the wake of the tragic tremblement de terre (earthquake) that devastated Japan a few days ago, an overheated debate has re-emerged on the international scene concerning the risks associated with the development of l’énergie nucléaire for civilian purposes.
Many opponents of the use of this form of energy are undoubtedly well-intentioned, and are quick to point out previous nuclear-related accidents, such as the 1979 Three Mile Island accident in Pennsylvania (an accident that, eerily enough, seems to have been announced to the “grand public” 12 days before its occurrence, in the famous American thriller “The China Syndrome“, starring Jane Fonda and Jack Lemon), or the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, the only of such accidents to be classified as a niveau sept (level seven) on the “Échelle internationale des événements nucléaires” (“The International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale.”)
But, in the same time, and beyond these very legitimate fears over the safety of our planet and its environment, several leaders of emerging countries, such as China, Brazil, India, and South Africa, suspect less laudable motivations behind re-launching the “nuclear debate”, as was the case with the “CO2 cap-and-trade” issue, whose true designs, in some powerful circles, had less to do with l’environnement per se than with issues of domination géopolitique and économique.

The movie is “CHINA Syndrome,” not “Chinese Syndrome.” There are also errors in English usage — “AT the same time,” not “IN the same time,” for example.

As for “AT the same time” vs. “IN the same time”, you may wish to know that, contrary to what you have been led to believe, the latter is perfectly consistent with good usage, as attested -among abundant examples- by the American writer Francis Marion Crawford, in his 1899 “Via Crucis” novel, or, in another type of publication, the 1893 “Sessional papers – Legislature of the Province of Ontario” (Ontario. Isn’t it precisely where your alma mater is located, according to your email?)

Une vidéo très éducative. Mais quant à pour ou contre, nous nécesitons de l’énergie, ça c’est sûr; mais comme je suis de l’Ukraine, je comprends très bien le danger que cela peut apporter

Le titre de l’émission est fort mal traduit (ça sent le traducteur automatique). Une meilleure traduction serait : « Underneath the maps ».

@Gabriel Votre commentaire quant à lui « sent » assurément « la critique constructive » 🙂
En réalité, cette traduction est si loin d’être littérale qu’elle renvoit à un jeu de mot dont la teneur semble, hélas pour vous, entièrement vous échapper: Les cartes auxquelles le titre fait allusion ne sont pas simplement de nature géographique (a geographical map, that is), mais sont plutôt entendues à un sens figuré, puisqu’il s’agit avant tout de géopolitique, comme c’est le cas avec le terme « The Great Game » (« Le Grand Jeu.»)
Cela dit, on ne saurait tenir tout un chacun d’être au fait de ces considérations (loin de là!), mais la traduction proposée présente l’avantage d’être interprétée à divers degrés, y compris au sens littéral, c’est-à-dire le seul que vous ayez pu avoir à l’esprit, malheureusement.
