“Trop d’amour tue” (Too Much Love Kills) Posted by on May 15, 2011 in Music, Vocabulary

Some have upheld the old sacred view that l’amour, le véritable amour (love, true love) is the one that leads to the attainment of l’immortalité (immortality.) The kind of love that, souvenez-vous (remember), impelled Dante’s ascent to the gates of le paradis (paradise), whence he joined his beloved Béatrice. The sort of love that was once known to us as l’amour courtois (courtly love), which ought to be distinguished, however, from the other “love”, a bit more “debonair” (understand it in French, literally, as “of good air”), of Lancelot and Guenevere, or Tristan and Iseult.

But that being the case, one may be tempted to ask: En ce bas monde (in this earthly world), would too much of a good thing be not good, even when it comes to the matter of love—or, perhaps, what would one perceive as love?

En d’autres termes (in other words), can trop d’amour (too much love) turn, fatally, into trop de mort (too much death)?

La Fille d’Octobre, femme écarlate” no doubt, sings “Trop d’amour tue” (“Too Much Love Kills“)

* LA FILLE D’OCTOBRE – “TROP D’AMOUR TUE” (“TOO MUCH LOVE KILLS”):

Je me lancerais bien du plus haut des toits

I’d readily plunge off the highest of the roofs

Les chevilles lestées des plus lourdes pierres

Ankles shackled by the heaviest stones

Pleine de cet amour qui me rendait fière

Awash with this love that made me proud

(Elèveras-tu ton regard sur moi?)

(Shall you raise your eyes upon me?)

I would readily jump into the two rivers

That my hollow cheeks carried along for you

Noyée dans les larmes étouffant ma voix

Drowned into the tears that dampen my voice

(M’accorderas-tu un peu de ton air?)

Shall you concede me some of your air?

Trop d’amour tue

Too much love kills

(May the sky secure me a wretched asylum)

Si tu me fais signe, je viendrais

If you signal me, I’ll come

I’d readily severe legs and arms

To offer the world my stone bust

Une fois pétrifiée au jardin d’hiver

Once petrified in the winter garden

(Auras-tu pitié de mon corps si froid?)

(Will you have mercy on my O’ so cold body?)

I’d readily burn in the blazes of hell

That you left all around me

If the devil ever bit my fingers

(Lui livreras-tu une juste guerre ?)

(Would you wage a righteous war against him?)

Trop d’amour tue

Too much love kills

(May the sky hold for me a wretched asylum)

Si tu me fais signe, je viendrais

If you signal me, I’ll come

Trop d’amour tue

Too much love kills

(Que le ciel me prépare un endroit pour me taire)

May the sky hold for me a place where I’ll be quiet

Si tu me refuses trop d’amour

If you refuse me too much love

I am strong to die a hundred times

A wrath of a thousand gods shan’t prevent me

If you come close, listen deep within me

My heart is Earth prompt to burst

Trop d’amour tue …

Too much love kills…

Trop d’amour tue

Too much love kills

(May the sky hold for me a wretched asylum)

Si tu me fais signe je viendrais

If you signal me, I’ll come

Trop d’amour tue

Too much love kills

(Que le ciel me prépare un endroit pour me taire)

May the sky hold for me a place where I shall be quiet

Si tu me refuses trop d’amour

If you refuse too much love

Je viendrais …Trop d’amour …

I’ll come… Too much love…
