On Friday, September 22nd, we experienced the fall equinox, so say au revoir to summer and bonjour shorter days and colder weather. The 23rd marks both my 30th year on earth (omg) and also the start of the astrological sign Libra.

Last week on two separate occasions, I was speaking to (much wiser) friends about my impending entry to my third decade – am I happy where I am? What do I need to change? All of those burning questions. Both friends mentioned a phenomenon I’d never heard of: the Saturn return. When you’re born, Saturn is in a specific spot in the sky. Once the planet makes a complete orbit around  the sun, it’s right around your 30th birthday (although it can be felt anywhere from 27-31). In Western astrology, a person’s life is separated into 29.5 year intervals, and these stages of life mark major transormations: the first is leaving youth behind and entering adulthood, the second (around ages 56-60) is maturity, and the third is reaching a wise old age at around 84-90.

Whether you believe astrology holds any scientific merit or not, you have to admit that it’s at least fun to read your horoscope. Each of the 12 signs is said to have their own characteristics, so I thought it’d be fun to say goodbye to my youth (RIP) while taking a look at le zodiaque (the zodiac).
