Me and my friend used to have a special bench. It was a simple brown bench, one of many public benches, but it was our bench. We’ve met there every Thursday evening, just before the weekend starts. I brought my dog, she brought her cigarettes. And we talked. We’ve talked about her exchanging boyfriends, odd jobs and new interests. We’ve talked about my steady boyfriend who hadn’t proposed yet. Conversations that used to lift my spirit. She always had a new hair color, an extremely embarrassing funny incident to share, and a date to get ready for. I felt so bourgeois in her presence, and our weekly meeting on the bench kept me alive.

And then my boyfriend finally proposed. I was excited, rambling nonstop about wedding arrangements, while her cigarette butts piled up under our bench. I enjoyed the glittering of my ring under the street light, when she told me about a new customer she met in the restaurant where she waitresses. We remained faithful to our bench even when I got pregnant. It was still comfortable when I got fat, and so jealous of her becoming even thinner than she was. I saved money for my first child and she changed to a cheaper brand of cigarettes.

I saw her for the last time a week before I delivered. On the same bench, with her glowing pink color hair, and a new outlandish nose ring, covering up her clenched jaw. I’ve crossed our bench every now and then with the stroller and the dog, but kept missing our Thursday meetings. I’ve called, but the line was off. And then I heard she killed herself, and I realized my colorful vivacious friend will never sit on our bench again. Benches all look the same, a piece of wood or metal on the side of the roads, ready to serve our fatigued bodies. But our rickety bench on the corner of my street will always be special.
