Using Facebook in Hebrew Posted by on Oct 17, 2013 in Learning Hebrew

00 - Home page

About a year and a half ago, I wrote an article on planning a Hebrew immersion day. And as a part of that immersion experience, I thought about Facebook and how you can use it to help you learn Hebrew.

VOCABULARY

לְהִכָּנסֵ – log in
שֵׁם מִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ – username
סִיסְמָה / סִיסְמָא – password

Signing in

00 - Signin

At Facebook’s homepage, we’re going to לְהִכָּנסֵ. So put in your שֵׁם מִשְׁתַּמֵּשׁ (which is your email or phone number), and then your סִיסְמָה / סִיסְמָא.

The News Feed

02 - Front Page

VOCABULARY
News feed
עִדְכּוּן – (status) update
So now you’re signed in, the first thing you see is the חֲדָשׁוֹת. You can check out what new things are posted, any new pics from your friends, etc. Or you can post a עִדְכּוּן without having to go to your timeline. Let’s check some of them out.

Favorites –

02 - Front Page sidebar

Newsfeed
Messages
Events
Photos

Pages Feed
Like pages
Create Ad

Status Update

02 - Status update

Status
Add photo/video
What’s on your mind? (masc)
What’s on your mind? (fem)

Finding friends –

Let’s say someone wants to friend you, or you want to friend someone. The section or link you’re looking for is (Add as a friend). Now, in which category would you like to add them under? A couple of choices are:
Close friends –
Acquaintances –
Family –

And you’ll get the confirmation:
[name 1] and Sean Young are now friends – [name 1] ו[שון יאנג] חֲבֵרִים כָּעֵת

Other things you can do

You may see your friends posting links to other Facebook pages, or even to websites they found interesting. You will know this when you see: [שון יאנג] פִּרְסְמָה קִישׁוּר עַל הַקִּיר שֶׁלָּהּ… (Sean Young posted a link on his wall). Well, they’ll see it that way if they have their Facebook page in Hebrew also.

Do they like what you posted?
[…] likes [Sean Young]’s link – […]

Or maybe a photo
[…] likes [Sean Young]’s photo – […]

To keep things fresh, a change of the profile pic is common:
Sean young changed his profile picture – [

Look for these on your page

If you have your page in Hebrew, see if you can find the following items. And use it as much as you can. It will seem difficult at first, but the more you use your page in Hebrew, the easier it gets and you’ll find it becoming enjoyable the more you discover.

Write a comment –
View all [4] comments –
[6] hours ago –
You, Michal Dekel and 2 more like this – אַתָּה/אַתְּ, מִיכַל דֶּקֶל ואְַרְבָּעָה עָשָׂר אֲחַרִים .
