Indian Instruments Posted by kunthra on Jan 1, 2011 in Uncategorized
There are numerous Indian instruments that produce an amazing array of sounds.
Take for example, the bulbul tarang, which uses two sets of strings. One set of strings is for the melody, which is often played by keys striking against each other like the keys of a typewriter. The other set of strings is for the drone.
The sarod is a stringed instrument that produces a deep and soulful sound. Sarod players must be disciplined to play the sarod because there are no frets, which means that the player must press hard against the fingerboard. This often leads to bruises and other welts on the fingers.

The tambura is a long necked stringed instrument with a resonator. The tambura is known for its tranquil ‘buzzing’ sound. You’ve probably heard the tambura used in a lot of music labeled as ‘meditation music’.

The vichitra veena is a stringed instrument that has two large resonating gourds attached to the bottom of the instrument. The ends of the vichitra veena are fashioned like the peacock, which is the national bird of India.
