Baul Posted by kunthra on Jul 19, 2010 in Uncategorized
The Baul (बाऊल) are a group of talented musicians from Bengal. The Baul often dress in bright orange or red clothes; and play music in public places.
Here is a video of a Baul musician. He is clearly talented because he is playing three instruments (four if you count his voice) all at once.
The Baul sing stories of love between gods and goddesses. The tradition of story-telling through song is passed down orally from generation to generation. The Baul are important to the Indian community because they possess all the traditional stories and songs of the Indian community. UNESCO even labeled the Baul as part of the “Masterpieces of the Proclamation of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” for their contribution to Indian culture.
Here is more information on the Baul.
