In Hindi, the vowels have a dependent form called matra (मात्रा ). Matras (मात्रा ) are vowels that cannot be written alone. They have to be accompanied with a consonant. Matras (मात्रा ) are different from independent vowels because independent vowels can be written alone.
Independent vowel: अ Dependent vowel: none Dependent form with consonant: p (प)
Independent vowel: आ Dependent vowel: ा Dependent form with consonant: paa (पा )
Independent vowel: इ Dependent vowel: ि Dependent form with consonant: pi (पि )
Independent vowel: ई Dependent vowel: ी Dependent form with consonant: pii (पी )
Independent vowel: उ Dependent vowel: ु Dependent form with consonant: pu (पु )
Independent vowel: ऊ Dependent vowel: ू Dependent form with consonant: puu (पू )
Independent vowel: ऋ Dependent vowel: ृ Dependent form with consonant: pr (ऋृ)
Independent vowel: ए Dependent vowel: े Dependent form with consonant: pe (पे)
Independent vowel: ऐ Dependent vowel: ै Dependent form with consonant: pai (पै)
