Hindi Pronouns Posted by on Jul 3, 2009 in Hindi Language

Here are some Hindi pronouns in the singular:

I – main (मै)

You – aap (आप)

He/She – vah (वह)

And now the plural versions of these pronouns:

We – ham (हम)

You all – aap (आप)

They – ve (वो)

Note that “you” or the second person is the same both in the singular and the plural. I have another comment to make about “you” which has to do with levels of respect.

“You” when you’re referring to a person who is younger or lower in status than you would be तू pronounced as tuu. I would only use this “you” in informal situations with close friends. If you use this “you” with people who are older than you or higher in status, it will come off as being rude. By the way, this is also in the singular.

When you’re of a similar status or age with someone, you can use tum or (तुम). This is more formal than the “you” in tuu or (तू). Tum or (तुम) is not the most formal way to say “you,” but it’s much better to use this “you” than to offend someone with tuu (तू). Tum (तुम) is used when you don’t want to be overly formal but want to still be respectful. Tumm (तुम) is really “you all” or “you people.” Whenever you have tum (तुम), you are referring to several people.

If you’re unsure which “you” to use, it’s better to be safe and use the most formal “you” which is aap or (आप)

This “you” is the same in the plural and singular and is used for those of higher status or those who are older than you.
