Masala Chai Posted by kunthra on Aug 5, 2009 in Hindi Language
Do you like to drink tea? If you do, you may like an Indian tea called masala chai (मसाला चाय). Masala chai (मसाला चाय) consists of tea leaves, water, milk, spices and sweetners. There is no fixed way to prepare masala chai (मसाला चाय). Some people boil the tea leaves first and then add the spices while others mix everything in from the beginning. The spices itself will vary from region to region. Generally speaking, the tea leaves will be boiled for a long time, which provides a high caffeine content for the tea.
Most masala chai teas will have several common ingredients despite the variation in preparation. The tea leaves itself will most likely be some kind of black tea. Usually milk will be added in addition to the sweetner. The sweetner can be condensed milk, white or brown sugar, or even honey.
Sometimes more than one spice is added to the tea. The spices can be anything from cinnamon, ginger, cloves, black pepper, mint leaves, chopped almongs, nutmeg, liquorice, or saffron. The spices can be any kind of herb grown locally.
While in India masala chai (मसाला चाय) is drunk warm, outside of India, there are chais of this sort that are served cold with ice. Some of the drinks are made from powdered consistencies instead of real tea leaves and the sweetners can be made from vanilla extract.
It’s hard not to like masaka chai (मसाला चाय). You can put whatever you desire according to your own personal preferences. It can be a warm drink in the winter and refreshing drink in the summer (if you have the non-Indian version).
