Do you remember our post on the compounds in Hindi? If not or you didn’t see the previous post on the compounds, lets have some practice on the same.

Compounds in Hindi are called समास (Samaas). It is used to shorten the sentence construct. For example, if you want to say the room for cooking, you may shorten it and say only a single word i.e. Kitchen. Sometime you also use a compound to replace two or more words.

Lets revise some compounds with some examples.

1. प्रतिदिन (Pratidin – Everyday) =  हर एक दिन ( Har ek din –  every single day)

2. आजन्म (Aajanm – Lifelong) =  जन्म भर (Janm bhar – full life)

3. भरपेट (Bharpet – Full Stomach) =  पेट भर के (Pet bhar ke – with full stomach)

4. रातोंरात (Rantonrat – Overnight) =  रात ही रात में (Raat hi raat mein – during night)

5. सादर (Saadar – Regards) =  आदर के सहित (Aadar ke sahit – with regards)

6. साफ़ – साफ़ (Saf – Saf – Explicit) =  बिलकुल साफ़ (Bilkul Saf – very clearly)

7. जेबकतरा (Jebkatra – Pick pocket) = जेब को कतरने वाला (Jeb ko katarne wala – one who pick pockets)

8. मनचाहा (Manchahaa – Desired) = मन से चाहा (Man se chaha – liked by mind)

9. रसोईघर (Rasoighar – Kitchen) = रसोई के लिए घर (Rasoi ke liye ghar – a house for cooking)

10. धनहीन (Dhanhin – Fortuneless) = धन से हीन (Dhan se hin – deficient of money)
