Maumere was once a top diving destination, but the earthquake and ensuing tsunami of 1992 destroyed most of the coral in the area and the tourism industry along with it. Located on the eastern side of Flores, Maumere is the island’s biggest town. While there isn’t much for tourists in town, there are some nice beachside hotels up the road. The town of Sikka is also an easy day-trip away, where you can see their beautiful wooden church.
