Starting a business is a very rewarding and frightening experience. Let’s learn some useful words related to starting a business.

1. Start-up. Start-up (inicial) is an adjective and it means that something (a company, etc.) has recently been started recently. Examples:

start-up companies
start-up costs
start-up capital

Start-up can also be a noun, a small business that has been recently started by someone.

a high-tech start-up
an Internet start-up


2. Business plan. A business plan (plano de negócios) is a very detailed plan that shows how to set up or develop a business. The business plan is usually written to borrow money from banks or investors.

3. Venture capitalist. A venture capitalist is someone who makes money by investing in high risk operations. (venture capital = capital de risco)

4. Overheads / running costs. Overheads or running costs (despesas gerais) are the essential expenses to run a business like salaries, rent, fixed bills (telephone, electricity, etc.). Here are some collocations with the words overheads and running costs.

to cut / reduce overheads
to have high / low overheads
annual running costs
day-to-day running costs

5. The cash flow (fluxo de caixa) of a company is the money that comes in and that goes out, that is, what you receive and what you pay. Collocations with cash flow:

operating cash flow
positive cash flow
negative cash flow
