Hoje nosso post trata da diferença entre os verbos lie e lay, que são bem confundidos pelos estudantes de inglês.

To lie (lied – lied) é verbo regular (faz seu passado com a terminação -ed) quer dizer mentir, não contar a verdade. Alguns exemplos:

She lied to me about the car. – Ela mentiu para mim com relação ao carro.
Don’t you dare lie to me! – Não ouse mentir para mim!

Como substantivo, podemos dizer que alguém tell a lie (contar uma mentira), believe a lie (acredita numa mentira), swallow a lie (engole uma mentira) ou live a lie (vive uma mentira). Também temos a expressão lie through one’s teeth, que quer dizer mentir descaradamente.

To lay (laid – laid) é verbo irregular e transitivo (precisa de um objeto após ele) e quer dizer colocar, por e até apostar. Exemplos.

She laid the baby on the bed. – Ela colocou o bebê na cama.
Please, lay the tray on the table. – Por favor, coloque a bandeja na mesa.
The builders are going to lay the foundations for the new apartments next week. – Os construtores vão fazer os alicerces dos novos apartamentos semana que vem.
Turtles are laying eggs this time of the year. – As tartarugas estão botando ovos esta época do ano.
She won’t be able to do it, I’d lay money on it. – Ela não vai conseguir fazer isso, aposto dinheiro nisso.

Agora o verbo lie também é irregular (lay – lain) e quer dizer estar deitado em algum lugar ou que algo está, simplesmente, posicionado em algum lugar. Veja alguns exemplos:

When I got home she was lying in bed, feeling sick. – Quando eu cheguei em casa ela estava deitada na cama, passando mal.
You know what I’d love to do now? Lie on a beach and not think about anything. – Sabe o que eu adoraria fazer agora? Estar deitado numa praia e não pensar em nada.
She was lying on her back, in the sunshine. – Ela estava deitada de costas, no sol.
I lay awake at night, thinking about my problems. – Fiquei acordado de noite, pensando nos meus problemas.
Don’t leave your clothes lying on the floor. – Não deixe suas roupas espalhadas pelo chão.
The river lies 30km to the south. – O rio fica 30km ao sul.
The city lay in ruins. – A cidade estava em ruínas.
The ship lies off the coast of Brazil. – O navio está na costa do Brasil.
If you’re tired, lie down a bit. – Se você está cansado, deite-se um pouco.
Here lies the body of … – Aqui jaz o corpo de …
The runner is lying in third place. – O corredor está em terceiro lugar.
The difficulty lies in knowing what we’re going to do next. – A dificuldade está em saber o que vamos fazer em seguida.
His main interests lie in … – Seus principais interesses estão em …
Your purse was lying open on the table, so I zipped it up. – Sua bolsa estava aberta na mesa, então eu fechei.
