– A abreviação dos números ordinais é feita acrescentando ao número as duas últimas letras de sua forma extensa.

first – 1st
second – 2nd
third – 3rd
fourth – 4th
twentieth – 20th
seventieth – 70th

Na grafia, as duas últimas letras podem ser elevadas.

– Lembre-se de que em português, ao lermos ou escrevermos por extenso os números ordinais, tanto na dezena, como na centena e no milhar, todos os algarismos vão para a forma ordinal. Em inglês, porém, apenas o último algarismo vai para a forma ordinal.

– Os ordinais que seguem nomes próprios, quando pronunciados, são precedidos de um artigo definido (the).

Os Anos

– Usamos o plural das dezenas para indicar décadas ou quando se quer dizer “quarentão”, “cinquentão”, etc.

This kind of shirt was very fashionable in the fifties.
Esse tipo de camisa estava muito na moda na década de cinquenta.

In the eighties people started paying more attention to their bodies.
Nos anos oitenta as pessoas começaram a prestar mais atenção ao seu corpo.

Sara is still in her twenties.
A Sara ainda está na casa dos vinte.

Mr Souza is in his fifties.
O Sr Souza é cinquentão.

– Podemos também usar os prefixos early-, mid- e late- para indicar a que parte da dezena nos referimos:

early-thirties = com trinta e poucos anos
mid-thirties = com uns 35, 36
late-thirties = com trinta e tantos anos, quase quarenta

– Para ler os anos em inglês é diferente do que em português. Veja como fica:

1988 – nineteen eighty-eight (dezenove oitenta e oito)
1820 – eighteen twenty (dezoito vinte)

Quando o algarismo for 0 (zero), lemos da seguinte forma:

1805 – eighteen oh five
1907 – nineteen oh seven

Quando o ano acaba em 00:

1900 – nineteen hundred (dezenove cem)
1700 – seventeen hundred (dezessete cem)

– Para ler data os números vão sempre para a forma ordinal:

On July 19th – no dia 19 de julho
The test will be on the 19th. – A prova será no diz 19.
