Vamos terminar a semana com uma expressão idiomática bem comum no inglês americano: a ballpark figure.

A ballpark figure é um número aproximado, uma estimativa, um guesstimate. Num contexto mais formal, chamamos a ballpark figure de rough order of magnitude. Veja alguns exemplos:

Can you give me a ballpark figure on the number of people who attended the event? – Você pode me dar um número aproximado de quantas pessoas foram ao evento?

“Ten thousand dollars is a good ballpark figure”, said John when asked how much the remodelling of the building would cost. – “Dez mil dólares é uma estimativa razoável”, disse John quando lhe perguntaram quanto custaria a reforma do prédio.

Your estimate is high, but still in the ballpark. – Sua estimativa está alta, mas ainda dentro da limite.

We don’t know exactly how much this is going to cost, so let’s use a ballpark figure, ok? – Não sabemos exatamente quando isso vai custar, então vamos usar uma estimativa, ok?

You should get a ballpark figure of these costs, then take it to the manager to see if he approves it. – Você deveria pegar uma estimativa desse custos, então levar para o gente para ver se ele aprova.
