1. go haywire – pifar, parar de funcionar. Haywire era um fio bem fininho usado para amarrar o feno (hay) nas fazendas. No começo do século XX cunhou-se a frase a haywire outfit, que era usada para indicar as empresas que utilizavam tal fio para consertar temporariamente algumas máquinas, por isso não funcionava muito bem.

The TV had gone completely haywire.
A TV pifou completamente.

I was talking to Mary when suddenly the telephone went haywire. I haven’t heard from her since.
Estava falando com a Mary quando de repente o telefone pifou. Não consegui mais falar com ela.

There we were, driving along, when the engine went haywire. It was two hours before the tow truck came.
Lá estávamos, dirigindo, quando o motor enguiçou. Demorou duas horas para o guincho chegar.

2. cut-and-dried – claro, definido, que não pode ser mudado

Although a deal has been agreed, it is not yet cut-and-dried.

O assunto dos direitos humanos de maneira alguma está claro.

3. put my finger on something – conseguir definir ou acertar algo

That is correct! You have certainly put your finger on the problem.
Está correto! Você conseguiu ver onde está o problema.

When she mentioned money, she really put her finger on the problem.
Quando ela mencionou dinheiro, realmente viu onde estava o problema.

I know there’s something wrong, but I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is.
Sei que algo está errado, mas não consigo ver onde está o problema exatamente.

4. throw someone for a loop – confundir, surpreender ou chocar alguém

When Bill heard the news, it threw him for a loop.
Bill ficou chocado ao ficar sabendo da notícia.

The manager threw Bob for a loop by firing him in front of everybody.
O gerente deixou Bob surpreso ao demiti-lo na frente de todos.
