Hey, how’s it going?

Vamos ver hoje três phrasal verbs bem interessantes e comuns com o verbo to fill (encher).

Fill in

1. preencher (uma ficha, um desenho de uma certa cor, o dia com alguma atividade)

She bought a packet of cement and began to fill in some holes. (Ela comprou um pacote de cimento e começou a tapar alguns buracos.)
Ask for a form, fill it in and hand it over to the management office. (Peça uma ficha, preencha-a e entregue no escritório da gerência.)
She drew a circle and filled it in. (Ela desenhou um círculo e o preencheu.)
I had to say something to fill in that awkward pause. (Eu tive que dizer algo para preencher aquela pausa desagradável.)

2. fill someone in on something – colocar alguém a par da situação.

I’ll fill you in on the details now. (Vou te colocar a par dos detalhes agora.)
Did Sam fill you in on the new project? (O Sam te colocou a par do novo projeto?)

3. fill in for someone – substituir/cobrir alguém por certo tempo (trabalho, etc.)

I’m filling in for the receptionist at the moment. (Estou no lugar da recepcionista no momento.)
One of the other girls is sick and I said I’d fill in. (Uma das outras meninas está doente e eu disse que ia substituí-la.)
He doesn’t work here regularly, he’s just a fill-in. (Ele não trabalha aqui geralmente, é só um quebra-galho.)

Fill out

1. preencher seus dados em uma ficha (semelhante a fill in).

It took me a long time to fill out the application form. (Levei muito tempo para preencher a ficha.)
I had to fill out some forms about the accident. (Tive que preencher uns papeis sobre o acidente.)

2. engordar

He’s filled out a lot since I’d last seen him. (Ele engordou muito desde a última vez que eu o vi.)
Tom’s really filled out, hasn’t he? (Tom engordou, não é?)

Fill up

1. encher completamente; ocupar um espaço (inteiro); preencher (o dia com atividades)

Fill the tank up, please. (Encha o tanque, por favor.)
Fill‘er up! (Completa! – o tanque de gasolina)
In the past, computers were massive, filling up a whole room. (No passado os computadores eram enormes, ocupando uma sala inteira.)
The point was to fill up the day with lots of activities for the kids. (Tínhamos que preencher o dia com muitas atividades para as crianças.)

2. ficar cheio de gente

By eight o’clock the restaurant was beginning to fill up. (Às oito horas o restaurante estava começando a encher.)
His office began to fill up with people. (O escritório dele começou a encher de gente.)

3. encher alguém de comida/bebida

They filled me up with cakes and sandwiches. (Eles me encheram de bolos e lanches.)
No filling yourselves up with with beers and chips, eh? (Não vão se encher de cervejas e batata frita, hein?)
