O phrasal verb pick up tem vários usos e sentidos em inglês.

1. pegar (algo que está num nível inferior).
Kids, pick up your toys and put them away. (Crianças, recolham seus brinquedos e guardem-nos.)
He picked up the book from the table and left. (Ele pegou o livro da mesa e saiu.)

2. levantar-se, recompor-se
He picked himself up quickly after he fell over. Luckily no one saw that. (Ele se levantou rapidamente depois de caiu. Ainda bem que ninguém viu.)
You have to pick yourself up after a failure. (Você tem de se recompor depois de um fracasso.)

3. pegar ou buscar alguém/algo (de carro)
Can you pick me up at the airport tomorrow? (Você pode me buscar no aeroporto amanhã?)
I have to pick up the laundry later on. (Tenho de buscar as roupas lavadas mais tarde.)

4. aprender, entender
Did you pick up any Spanish when you were in Mexico? (Você aprendeu um pouco de espanhol quando esteve no México?)
There were some Americans at the party. I tried to pick up what they were saying but they spoke very fast. (Havia alguns americanos na festa. Tentei entender o que eles diziam mas eles falavam muito rápido.)

5. ganhar
That movie picked up 3 Academy Awards.(Aquele filme ganhou 3 Oscars.)
Do you think a Brazilian movie will pick up any awards at Cannes next year? (Você acha que um filme brasileiro vai ganhar algum prêmio em Cannes ano que vem?)

6. pagar (conta)
Who’s going to pick up the tab tomorrow? (Quem vai pagar a conta amanhã?)
He picked up the bill at the bar last night. (Ele pagou a conta no bar ontem à noite.)

7. “cantar”, flertar
He used to go from bar to bar picking up girls, but never had any luck. (Ele ia de bar em bar cantando as garotas, mas nunca tinha sorte.)

8. identificar o cheiro de algo
I smelled something weird and I was trying to pick it up. (Senti um cheiro estranho e estava tentando identificar o que era.)
I couldn’t pick up what that smell was. (Não consegui identificar o que era aquele cheiro.)

9.receber (sinal)
My radio picks up lots of Latin American radio stations. (Meu radio pega várias radios latino-americanas.)
Do you pick AM stations in your radio? (Seu radio pega radios AM?)

10. perceber
The teacher didn’t pick up Jack’s spelling mistakes. (O professor não percebeu os erros de grafia de Jack.)
They didn’t pick up my Brazilian accent. (Eles não perceberam meu sotaque brasileiro.)

11. retomar
Let’s pick up where we left off. (Vamos retomar de onde paramos.)
I’d love to pick up our conversation about business sometime. (Gostaria de retomar nossa conversa sobre negócios alguma hora.)

12. melhorar
My business is picking up. I have new clients every week. (Meu negócio está melhorando. Tenho novos clientes todas as semanas.)
After having studied a lot, my French is finally beginning to pick up. (Depois de ter estudado muito, meu francês está finalmente começando a melhorar.)
