Japanese Dogs Posted by on Feb 24, 2011 in Culture

Do you like dogs? I myself happen to like dogs. If you feel the same way, let me tell you about some dog breeds that are native to Japan.

Akita Inu (秋田) are loyal, friendly and energetic dogs. However, they are mischievous animals and sometimes cause trouble for their human masters by destroying property. That’s why Akita dogs need extensive exercise and need to be trained to behave. The ancestors of Akita dogs have existed in Japan since ancient times, and Akita dogs continue to be loved by the Japanese people.

Kai Ken (甲斐) have been in Japan for centuries. Originally these dogs were used for hunting, because they are good swimmers, have strong running muscles and are intelligent. Kai dogs can come in colors of black, red or a mixture of the two. An additional plus is that they don’t have an overly aggressive nature and are safe around children.

Shikoku Inu (四国) are native to Shikoku Island, which is why they are called Shikoku dogs. Shikoku dogs can be brownish-black, reddish black, tan or cream colored. They are relatively obedient dogs and can stay quiet when indoors. However, they tend to shed a lot of fur and at times it can be difficult to manage.

Kishū Inu (紀州犬,) have been in Japan for centuries and they are generally white in color with a curled tail. Kishū dogs are quite stubborn, and may take some time to train. However, they are very loyal to their masters and can make great pets with training. Since Kishū dogs were originally used as hunting dogs, they have a strong hunting instinct.

Shiba Inu (柴犬) have been in Japan since ancient times. They are very headstrong animals and do not always make good pets. Shiba dogs are also known for their high pitched scream, which they emit when they get emotional. The plus side is that Shiba dogs are fastidious with their self grooming, so minimal grooming is needed for these animals.
