Hello, there! ¿Cómo están?

Let’s kick June off with eight very interesting and useful idioms using the preposition “por”. ¿Están listos?

01. andarse por las ramas = to beat around the bush

No te andes por las ramas y danos tu decisión final.
Stop beating around the bush and give us your final decision.

Quisiera que Jack no andara por las ramas y me dijera lo que realmente piensa.
I wish Jack would stop beating around the bush and tell me what he really thinks.

02. hablar por los codos = to talk the hind leg off a donkey, to be a chatterbox

Aquella niña habla por los codos, ¡por Dios!
That girl is a chatterbox, for God’s sake!

Habla por los codos pero no dice nada que se aproveche.
He talks the hind leg off a donkey, but he doesn’t say anything worth listening to.

03. por h o por b = for one reason or another

Si por h o por b no puedo hoy, lo haré mañana.
If for one reason or another I can’t do it today, I will do it tomorrow.

Dejó el curso, por h o por b.
He gave up the course, for one reason or another.

04. salirse por la tangente = to go off on a tangent

Los políticos son especialistas en salirse por la tangente.
Politicians are specialists at going off on a tangent.

Cuando le dan responsabilidad, siempre se sale por la tangente.
When he’s given responsibilities, he always goes off on a tangent.

05. pasar por alto = to overlook, to skip (something), to miss, to ignore

¿Hay algo que estoy pasando por alto?
Is there something I’m missing?

Siempre pasa por alto nuestras sugerencias.
He always ignores our suggestions.

06. salvarse por los pelos = to have a narrow escape

Iba conduciendo y de repente apareció frente a mí un perro. Pegué un frenazo y el perro se salvó por los pelos.
I was driving and a dog came out of nowhere. I stepped on the brakes and the dog had a narrow escape.

Estuvo muy enfermo y se salvó por los pelos.
He was very sick and had a very narrow escape.
