In this Spanish lesson we will practice using El Condicional, which corresponds to the conditional ‘Would’ tense in English. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening.

These are the rules of how to conjugate the verbs for this tense:

Trabajar: To work:

(Yo) trabajaría: I would work
(Tú) trabajarías: You would work (friendly)
(Usted) trabajaría: You would work (formal)
(Él/ella) trabajaría: He/She would work
(Nosotros/as) trabajaríamos: We would work
(Vosotros/as) trabajaríais: You would work (group/friendly)
(Ustedes) trabajarían: You would work (group/formal)
(Ellos/as) trabajarían: They would work

Let’s test your listening comprehension and see if you can understand a short audio in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Please familiarise yourself with the following words and phrases before listening to the audio below:

Postre: dessert
Importar: to mind
Tarta: cake

Now play the audio to listen a conversation between two friends. Can you understand what they are saying? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Elena: ¡Hola Brian!
Brian: Hola Elena ¿Qué tal?
Elena: Bien, pero estoy en el trabajo. No tengo mucho tiempo para hablar.
Brian: Oh, perdona. Pensaba que estarías en casa. ¿Te gustaría venir a cenar a mi casa? Van a venir Alba y Ramón.
Elena: Vale, pero primero tengo que ver a mi hermano.
Brian: ¿A qué hora?
Elena: No estoy segura. Me dijo que me llamaría pero todavía estoy esperando.
Brian: Puedes venir tarde, no pasa nada. ¿Podrías pasar por el supermercado?
Elena: ¿Para qué?
Brian: No he preparado ningún postre. ¿Podrías comprar algo?
Elena: Me encantaría ayudarte. Pero no voy a tener tiempo de ir al supermercado. Además creo que tú deberías comprar el postre ¿no? Yo soy una invitada.
Brian: Oh Elena ¿Te importaría ayudarme? Estoy haciendo una comida muy complicada y no tengo tiempo de ir al supermercado. ¿Podrías comprar una tarta?
Elena: Vale. ¿De chocolate?
Brian: Sí, perfecto. De chocolate.
