Últimamente he pasado algún tiempo en Madrid. Es una ciudad enorme, con gran variedad de cosas por hacer. Al ser turista en mi tiempo libre, no pude evitar visitar algunos de sus monumentos y lugares más importantes. He paseado por el Retiro, visitado el museo del Prado, y por supuesto (adoro la fotografía) he hecho miles de fotos (aunque hoy solo os mostraré una). Revisando algunas de ellas, recordé un artículo que leí sobre Cibeles, una de las estatuas más famosas de Madrid, que se encuentra rodeada de cuatro impresionantes edificios: el Banco de España, el Palacio de Buenavista, el Palacio de Linares y el Palacio de Cibeles, o edificio de Correos.

Estoy segura de que todos sabéis que Cibeles era la diosa de la fertilidad, y la tierra. Y que esta fuente es el lugar donde el Real Madrid celebra sus victorias. Pero quizá no sepáis que también la usaban los fans del Atlético de Madrid con el mismo propósito, hasta que decidieron “mudarse” a la fuente de Neptuno para así evitar contacto con los “merengues” (expresión coloquial para referirnos a los jugadores del Real Madrid, y sus fans).

Pero algo mucho más interesante es el rumor de que está conectada con el sistema de seguridad del Banco de España. Se dice que si las alarmas del banco saltasen, el sótano y la cámara acorazada se inundarían con el agua de Cibeles.

Si no podéis ir a Madrid, pero visitáis Méjico, encontraréis una réplica exacta, donada por la comunidad española en Méjico, como regalo de hermanamiento entre ambas ciudades.

Recently, I have spent some time in Madrid. It is big city, with a lot of different things to do. Being myself a tourist in my free time, I couldn’t help visiting some of its most important monuments and places. I have walked in the Retiro, visited the Prado museum, and obviously, (I love photography), I have taken thousands of pictures. Reviewing some of them, I remembered an article I read about Cibeles, one of the most famous statues in Madrid, surrounded by four magnificent buildings: The Bank of Spain, the Palacio de Buenavista, the Palacio de Linares and the Palacio de cibeles or Correos building.

I´m sure you all know that Cibeles was the goddess of fertility and earth. And that this fountain is the place where Real Madrid celebrates its victories. But maybe you didn’t know that it was also used by Atlético de Madrid fans with the same purpose, till they decided to move to Neptune’s fountain to avoid contact with the “merengue” (usual way to refer to Real Madrid players and fans) celebrations

But something much more interesting is the rumour that it is connected with Banco de España security system. It is said that if the bank alarms went off, its basement and the vault would be flood with Cibeles water.

If you can’t go to Madrid, but you visit México, you will find an exact replica, donated by the Spanish community in Mexico, as a twinning present between both cities.
