In this Spanish lesson we are going to look at the difference between the Spanish words Saber and Conocer. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening.

The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Advanced Spanish Lesson – Saber and Conocer

Now play the audio to listen a conversation. Can you understand what is being said? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Transcript:

Carlota: Sam ¿Sabes si Marta va a venir a las clases de francés?
Sam: No sé, no me dijo nada cuando le comenté que hoy empezaban.
Carlota: Ah vale. Como sabe hablar varios idiomas pensaba que le gustaría aprender francés.
Sam: Igual no necesita las clases. Sé que su hermano Tomás habla francés muy bien, así que igual ella también. ¿Conoces a Tomás?
Carlota: ¿A Tomás? Me suena que le he visto alguna vez, pero no le conozco personalmente.
Sam: Pues Tomás sabe diez idiomas.
Carlota: ¿Diez? ¡Qué máquina! Yo con saber inglés y francés me conformo.
Sam: Ya, es difícil aprender idiomas.
Carlota: Espero aprender algo con estas clases de francés. ¿Tú sabes algo?
Sam: No, nada. ¿Tú?
Carlota: Me sé una canción en francés de memoria. Me la enseñó mi madre cuando era pequeña. Solíamos ir a Francia de vacaciones. Conozco Francia bastante bien, pero no sé nada de francés.
Sam: Bueno, si te sabes una canción y conoces el país, no empiezas de cero.
Carlota: Supongo que no. Bueno, ¿vamos a la clase? Que vamos a llegar tarde.
Sam: Sí, vamos.
