In this Spanish lesson we will practice more about how to describe things that we usually do using regular Spanish verbs. As usual, first we will review some relevant grammar and vocabulary and then see if you can follow a short listening. This lesson continues on from Lesson 22 and Lesson 23 in this course which also looked at using el verbo estar to describe personality and feelings.

This lesson is part of a Spanish course that practices the grammar and vocabulary first introduced in my beginner Spanish course posted here on the Transparent Language blog. Let’s test your listening comprehension and see if you can understand a short audio in Spanish. The transcript to the audio will be given at the end of the post but please try not to look at it until you have tried playing and understanding the audio a few times.

Beginner Spanish Lesson 13 Regular Present Tense (Part 1)

Please familiarise yourself with the following words and phrases before listening to the audio below:

Juntos: together
El mismo: the same
Edificio: building
Todos los días: every day
Cerca de aquí: close by
Lejos: far
Normalmente: usually
A veces: sometimes
Hacer: to do
Terminar: to finish

Now, play the audio to listen to a conversation between two friends. Can you understand what they are saying? Play the audio a few times before you look at the transcript. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every single thing the two people are saying. Try to catch whichever words you can and then try to piece things together to work out what is being said.

Transcript:

Tom: Hola Elena ¿Juan y tú trabajáis juntos?
Elena: No, no trabajamos juntos pero trabajamos en el mismo edificio. Comemos juntos todos los días.
Tom: ¿Vivís cerca de aquí?
Elena: Sí, vivimos muy cerca de aquí.
Tom: ¿Coméis en casa?
Elena: No, normalmente comemos en un restaurante. A veces Juan come en casa y yo como en mi oficina.
Tom: ¿Qué hacéis cuando termináis el trabajo?
Elena: Cuando terminamos el trabajo, vamos a casa en coche. Normalmente yo escucho música y Juan lee un libro. Luego cenamos y después vemos la televisión. A veces Juan habla con sus padres por Skype. Ellos viven en Tenerife.
Tom: ¿Y tú hablas con tus padres por Skype también?
Elena: No, mis padres y yo hablamos por teléfono normalmente.
